MG TD TF 1500 - Water pump re-do
Before I get to ripping into it, is this a truly servicable part with a high rate of success, or should I just buy a new one? Moss... other's? |

IMHO, you can't beat sending it to Butch Taras to have him rebuild it for you. Bud |

Butch Taras, 3733 Fourth Ave. Glendale, CA. 91214 USA Telephone / Fax +1 818-249-9031 mgyowner@yahoo.com Thanks, I'll call him Monday. I'd rather keep to the original parts when I can. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/taras.shtml |

Mitch, as you've probably worked out I'm not a big fan of a lot of replacement parts, so do it up is my recommendation. Butch is no doubt a whiz with water pumps & I've found him very helpful. It isn't that difficult though to refurbish the original late TD/TF pump (24433) yourself. For less than $40, just replacing the seal & the bearings should get you another 100,000 or so miles. I use a seal from a washing machine & I also remove the shield from the opposing faces of the two bearings so that the grease nipple can still be used. If you promise not to circulate or publish it I can send you a copyrighted 'how to' set of instructions. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, Would you mind to send the information to me? I promise not to share it! I have some overheating problems that could be caused by a new pump providing insufficient flow rate. I thought of improving the unit using some impeller from a modern engine to increase the flow rate ant even the efficiency. Your instructions will be of help. Thanks in advance. Jesús |

Peter, I hear ya on the benchwork DIY. There are some things I used to relish, but I've restored 9 cars from Model T's to the MGA this year. At 60, I find getting tangled up in the small parts frustrating time-wise and I would rather accomplish a few things at the same time. The engine rebuild, harness, seats, frt susp., etc., will be plenty to keep me busy. AND..... I am eager to support those who support our hobby. So, send out the water pump? Easy decision. |

Peter, would you mind sending me a copy of the how to instructions. Thanks Tim TD12524 |

Butch rebuilt my water pump and installed an improved bronze impeller. Sandy |

Tim you have mail. Mitch if Butch wasn't on the other side of the world & I had more money than I have time, I'd also have used his services. Shipping to & from the States is a deal breaker for me though especially when you consider the present exchange rate. I'm happy to share the knowledge I've gained & help others who continue to help us all. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Nothing negative about Butch's quality. He is doing one for me as my spare but if you have a lead time shorter then four months well you may think twice. I installed the moss water pump and it too has the bronze guide. Works great. I was totally impressed that you resorted 9 cars this year ranging from a T to MGA. At that rate you may need to go the Moss. |

JWP, funny. I don't need much sleep. |

MAndrus, N Carolina: "but I've restored 9 cars from Model T's to the MGA this year". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It has taken me several years to restore one car. Always knew I was slow; just didn't know how slow until now. :-( Currently waiting for a Butch Taras water pump. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Peter: Would you please send me your water pump refurbish info (it will remain private). I have my water pump that I have a NOS seal for but it has some age cracks. I would like to refurbish this original pump on my project. It is a 50 TD engine going into a 54 TF. Many thanks Rod Murray |
