MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump Removal, Etc.
So.....I've been driving my TF off and on since it arrived here last summer. I could tell the water pump was failing, because it was noisy and there was a bit of wiggle in the shaft. Today it failed. Now I need to remove it and send it out for rehab. Someone named Butch was recommended. I do not now recall who recommended Butch, but I think it is appropriate to seek sage advice from this forum. Questions arise, such as: * do I need to remove the radiator to facilitate removal of the water pump? * what other items require removal? I thought I had a workshop manual, but apparently I didn't actually pull the trigger on that order. What's the best manual for general TF maintenance? Cheers, Frank |

Don't know the answer to the first question, but I do know that water pumps have been discussed a lot lately and there's much in the recent archives. As to the second question, I pulled mine easily without removing the radiator. Removed the generator to make access better and the water pump came out without issue. Bit tricky cleaning the gasket surface, but I suspect it was more my old eyes than it being truly difficult. :( |

TF water pump removal is a bit more difficult that TD,, because of lack of space and a cross brace,, Tape a piece of cardboard to the inside of the rad first, to protect your knuckels,, SPW |

Frank - Can't help you with the water pump, but I can help with the manuals. Click on the links. When the manual opens, click on the "download" icon near the top-center of the screen to download (a downward pointing arrow with a bar across the tip.) [Looks like you can't click on the links, so copy and paste them into your browser.] The downloaded manuals are bookmarked so you can easily go to the desired topic. And they are searchable by clicking "Edit" then choose "Find" in the dropdown menu. Enter the word or phrase in the window. > Workshop Manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxisXBEpc-IWdHBJQmhEYkRZLWc/view?usp=sharing > TF Operation Manual https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxisXBEpc-IWcDFaN3h6Ql9XWms/view?usp=sharing > Instructions to print the Operation Manual as a booklet to keep in your glovebox ... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxisXBEpc-IWNWNOLV8zN1dMOFU/view?usp=sharing In addition to my laptop, I have the Workshop Manual and Operation Manual on my iPad and iPhone so that I can refer to them on the road. Lonnie, thanks so much for posting this! I have my Workshop Manual on loan to the machine shop so they have all the relevant data on the engine as they spec it... have been feeling like a dog that's lost its tail in the past few days :) This is much appreciated! |

Frank, if you are interested, it's looking like the parts are now available to rebuild your water pump yourself. Bob Schapel - bobschapel@optusnet.com.au - in Australia has a source for a seal that fits without machining required, and the bearings are a commonly available item, as are 37mm internal retaining rings. Unless there is damage to the spindle or pump body, this is certainly something you can do yourself. But If you want an improved version, Butch Taras does a six vane impeller version that is very well thought of by those who have used his services. |
