MG TD TF 1500 - Water temperature gauge in a 52 TD

I have a Lucas water temperature gauge in my 52 TD. It has not worked since the late 1960's. My first guess is a dead sending unit. Anybody know a source for 52 vintage sending units?

I believe that the 52 did not have a temp gage as standard.
Just oil pressure and Amps.
The later TD's did have dual Gage's. Pressure and Temp.
The temp gage is actually a pressure gage. It has a bulb, filled with fluid that expands with temperature. May be ether.
If yours is like this you probably have a fluid leak.
There are several older threads on repairing them.

Or send it to Nisonger, who can fix them. Easiest test is to hold a match under the bulb and see if the needle moves at all. Probably not...

Erick,

Before the dual gauges, the water temp gauge was a dealer-installed option. I have one on my 1950 TD. Instead of an electronic sensor/sending unit, their is a metal bulb filled with ether connected to the back of the gauge. The bulb is screwed into a mount on the upper left corner of the radiator. The usual problem is a leak somewhere in the line where the ether leaks out.

My temp gauge seems to measure centigrade rather than Fahrenheit, as marked on the gauge.

Nissonger is the premier place to have them rebuilt (mine will go there at some point).

Here is an example of the separate water temperature gauge fitted to my 1951 TD.

My car was built on 23.10.1952 and has a dual gauge. It may have been retro-fitted but I have my doubts.

My '50 TD of course came without a temp gauge. The 1st owner installed a VDO gauge in the foot well, not very confinient. So I moved it to the center under the dash and made an aluminium mount that somewhat follows the curve of the dash.

My water gauge is an aftermarket version probably late fifties or early sixties, mounted under the dash. Very inconvenient. At some point I'll probably upgrade to a rebuilt dual temperature gauge.
