MG TD TF 1500 - Weeping brake light switch

Is this a common problem, or am I the only unlucky one? It seems to be leaking between the plastic and the brass. Doesn't seem likely to cause a catastrophic failure but I guess I should replace it any way (shame because it works well). Or is there a fix?

Dave, The weeping problem will get worse. This seems to be a common problem on some switches. I bought 4 from NAPA in less than 2 weeks, after the 4th one they just gave my money back. I then bought one from Moss. It's still working with no weeping. That was around three or four years ago.

When they what yours is doing, just replace it. PJ

Thats what I thought, but was really checking whether there was a generic problem. I have a spare but it has blade terminals rather than screws. Not as per, but maybe that's a good thing.

New ones with screw terminals are available ABINGTON SPARES has them. Under 8 bucks,,

They also have pos ground LED bulbs for the rear lights,, nice and bright !!

Thanks Steve, but I can get the screw terminal version over here. Yes I agree leds for the rear and brake lights are a great improvement and well worth fittimg.

I now manufacture LED inserts (not bulbs, complete inserts) for the early square tail light TD. Much brighter than the LED bulbs. Available for either negative or positive ground. I also do them for the TC, YA, YB, TA, TB, PA, PB, NA, NB, SA. MGA 1500, MGA 1600 MKII, and the MK I to III Classic Mini. See www.brittrix.com/

Dave, when I put a new switch on mine, I installed a relay to take the strain off the new switch, which I've been told are not as durable as the originals. So far everything is cool. PJ

I fitted leds, which I believe does a similar thing and electrically the switch works well.
