MG TD TF 1500 - What a Rip Off !!!!!!

Because of Covid restrictions and the winter weather I have decided to take my MG off the road until next spring. I went on line to complete a SORN application (Statutory Off Road Notification) and had started to complete the form when I noticed the cost was £30 or £40 for an express service. After a little further examination of the small print I realised this was not the Government site I was using but some cowboy outfit that had appeared at the top of my Google search for SORN application. The Government site was the third down the Google search and it literally took me one minute to register the SORN. £30 and then another ten for express service, what a con.

Jan,
thanks for the reminder.

This is why companies pay (Ad in bold) or worked other ways to be at the top of page 1 as many people will just click on those sites at the top of page 1.

Google is all about selling (and taking over any of its competition) nothing's free from corporate America.

If when shopping instead of using Google or going direct you use TopCashback (or similar) you will get an idea of how much some links are worth to Google and the trader, good percentage discounts often.

It also depends on what you type in as to the results you get, I've just typed 'sorn' into Google and the first three are legitimate 'gov.uk' and the rest of the page 1 with proper companies or results.

Cheers.

Why have you applied for SORN ?, I presume your MG is Historic registered so you save no tax anyway.
Am I missing something?

Hi Ray,

I should have mentioned I was referring to my "modern" TF. It is a 2005 and so I have to pay for tax and a MOT. It has only done 9000 miles and looks and drives like a brand new car. I am attempting to keep it that way hoping it will increase in value but fear that will never happen. Valuation guides show it is worth £3000 and yet a 100,000 mile Mini is at £15000. My car has pristine BRG bodywork, green/black leather interior, a heated glass screen, electric power steering, central locking and Sony sound equipment. What's happening!

Have a god Christmas

Thanks Jan, that makes sense now.
I agree with you on valuation, the "NEW" TF did not deserve the reputation it got. Many people did not keep an eye on the water level and additives, and then they they gunned them when cold. The "K" series engine is a little jewel when treated correctly.

If it is any consolation, ( I am in Australia) I recently sold my 2003 MG Tf 135, for $12,000 AUD (same as I paid two years earlier) It was in showroom condition with just 70,000 kilometres (42,000 miles)and sold quickly.

It was a lovely MG, and the sole reason I sold it, was because of the difficulty in physically maintaining it, especially the engine and transmission etc. Being a hands on MG owner, it didn't suit and it went, reluctantly. These later MG's are good cars, and do not deserve the low values, so it is a shame they are viewed as not sufficiently worthy stablemates to the classic MG's of yesteryear.
