MG TD TF 1500 - What are these holes for?

When I stripped the tub, I found two holes on
the front door edge. There is an exact match on the other side of the tub.

Any ideas what they were for?

Bruce Cunha

See if they match up with the door latch / silent block. Often used to secure the mechanism.
Rick

Weld them up. They don’t belong there. But then your going to need to replace the failed T nuts in the timbers that hold the silent block adjustment plate on the A pillars

A PO had done some welding on the skin of the door hinge stile. Compare the length of the two pieces of timber on the left. The new one is the correct length, the shorter one is missing some considerable length that had been burnt away by welding in situ. Point being to weld with caution. Cheers

You usually see carriage bolts holding down the door strikers.

Whoever did this went the extra mile. :-)

Peter. That was a topic of discussion between my brother and I today. We are thinking of using a syringe and putting water into the holes prior to welding to try and keep the timbers from catching fire.

Small quick blips on the welder to get little beads is what we are planning.

Interestingly, I never had any issues with my door strikers not being tight. I will look to see if the T Nuts are in place.

I had a similar issue with one of the angled plates on the rear corner at the top of the tub that was out of alignment due to previous impact damage. I was concerned not only about burning the timber but also about water causing subsequent rusting of both the tub skin and the bracket. I drowned the area with RP 7 once I'd finished the welding. If you are nervous about welding in that area, I imagine the holes could be successfully and permanently filled with epoxy resin.

Bruce,

If you want to be a purist and acquire a new skill you could fill them with lead.

Leading isn't all that hard, it just takes a little practice and knowing the Technic. Here's one place on the top of the rear quarter panel that was damaged years ago, I filled it in with lead and reshaped to match the door top, plus the bottom of the same panel. As you can see, I don't like plastic fillers. PJ

The bottom of the panel.

PJ. I have all the tools and materials for leading. My brother and I are going to use it for the door edge indent on the tub. I cut this a bit deep when taking the paint off.

I may pick your brain when we get to that part.
Bruce Cunha

Bruce, a tip, I always use tinners fluid and brush it on, a mask is preferable to lessen the smell. Don't know if this brand is still available, but their all pretty much the same. PJ
