MG TD TF 1500 - What is it?

Can someone tell me what this is?

Thanks

I took it apart. The light bulb moves downward when the screw is tightened. There is a red lens in the knurled nut and a small hole in it that would allow the light inside to be viewed from the face of the nut. I understand how it works but I have no idea what the practical application would be.

It is just a warning light. The screw goes through a hole in, possibly, a wooden car dash-panel, into the threaded end of the main barrel. The 'spring' washer would be at the rear of the panel, and the screw is not meant to touch the bulb. There would be a switch somewhere, possibly an oil pressure switch, that would put electrical power on the wire to the bulb when something failed, turning the warning light on.

Should have said that the warning light would be wired to the switch.

I think the washer is a 'spire' washer.
R A WILSON

RA, I believe you are correct. The movement of the bulb confused me. The movement is simply a result of the spring pushing the center contact against the bulb. The bulb still works. I wonder what its original function was and what car (or machinery) it was attached to? Thanks for the reply.

Another thought - the main barrel needs to be connected to the other side of the power source.
R A WILSON

I put 12v to the wire and grounded the barrel and the lamp lit. So I would think being grounded in the dash (or some other grounded surface) the light will come on when a voltage is applied to the wire.

A BLACK-OUT cover? During war you would not bright lights.
M Grogan

any numbers of printing on the unit?
Bruce Cunha

M grogan, the dot of red light is certainly small . You would not see it unless you were positioned directly in front of it.

Bruce, no visible stamped numbers. Although there is what appears to be a number 3 in black on the silver barrel. Someone on another site suggested it might be an over 30 mph warning light.
