MG TD TF 1500 - What is it?
Anyone know what this is? It's about 10.5 inches (26.5 cm) . Thanks Tim TD12524 Sorry forgot to attach photo. See next post |

I know how long mine is (10.5") but how did you know that? |
S Cole |
Your wife told me. Sorry, couldn't resist. |
TW Burchfield |
Sorry, tried to post the picture from my phone. Here it is. Tim ![]() |

I think it's the reset for the trip counter. Just a guess but I have one too... |

Mine in place. Matthew. ![]() |

Thanks D and Matt. Matt, is you car a TF? Tim |
TW Burchfield |
Matthew I can't work out where that's attached to in your pic. Is it under the dash. Thanks Darryl |
D Lamb |
I sure could use an original one of those for my TD. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Yes, TF, attached to the rear-underside of the LHS glove box next to the black undertray. Matthew. ![]() |

I'm not so sure that it is a TF cable. The sheath doesn't look right as well as the clip but then again it could just be the photo and the wrong clip.

As per usual,Matt Ms TF reset trip cable and fittings is spot on original. Unusually the original plating surface is correctly depicted as well. LaVerne's is TF also, however the plating surface has typically been eroded off. Not sure if TDs had a different clamp bracket. Cheers TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Rob, the fitting that bolts onto the dash on mine looks original and is different from the one in Matt's photo and it looks a bit longer. The TD reset cable/shaft is only about 3" to 5 " long and is fitted directly to the speedo. Someone else said it could be from a saloon car. Tim |

The trip reset for a TD goes straight down and protrudes from the under dash cover, right below the tach. Cheers - Dave |

Don't suppose you know where I can find an original TD trip reset do you Dave? Anyone? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, Went down to our Garage this afternoon (it is 41C degrees !) in the hope of finding a TD trip reset cable to no avail. I wonder if a TF trip reset could be shortened to do the job ? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Peter - Please e-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net - I believe that I have at least part of one, but I will need a reminder to check - tomorrow I go in for cataract surgery on my left eye (already had the right eye done two weeks ago). Cheers - Dave |

Peter, On reflection I suspect that the square drive end of the TF reset may be different from the 'gear' end drive for a TD reset? Cheers Rob Grantham |
Rob Grantham |
Thanks Rob & Dave. I'll email you tomorrow Dave. No rush. Good luck with the surgery. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

In case anyone is looking for a TD reset piece it is a solid round shaft protruding 2 1/2 inches from the bottom of the speedometer. It is not a cable. The shaft engages the reset mechanism with a small pin in the shaft forming a T shape, not a square end like the TF cable. Tim TD12524 |

When I made my TD tripper. This is what I did. Came out just like the original in my first TD. Used a piece of choke outer cable - [the springy stuff.] headless Screw and a small copper tube drilled for the small split pin that goes in the speedo trip shaft. Used the original knurled knob that pushed into the outer cable tightly and covered with heat shrink to make it look nice. The trip need to flex to get the speedo into the hole in the dash. Just need to be long enough to poke out the underside of the dash. Vertical Hole should already be in the dash if original. Rod ![]() |

Peter:'My TD had a broken shaft. Someone in the group sent me a picture of theirs. I loaded the pix into a drafting program and measured it. I made a new extension. I have a drawing of the knob but not the shaft. As I remember I made an adapter, and did not attempt to remove the broken part from the speedo. The speedo may have even had had such an adapter. I also made "Look Alike" cotter pins by "squishing the heads of standard SS pins in a machinists vise. In the collage: Upper left, My broken shaft and the new one. Upper Right, "Look Alike" cotter. Middle Left, adapter and extension mounted. I would have used Locktite to secure adapter. Middle Right, extension. Lower Left, drilling hole in extension shaft. Lower Right, drawing of knob. This was done in 2011. Jim B. ![]() |
