MG TD TF 1500 - Wheel cribs
I am going to need to lift my TF to remove/replace the gearbox when the weather cools off a little.
Last time I did it it had it on ramps, but they are only 6 high, needed it up maybe 8 so I looked at things called wheel cribs, big block things that the wheel sit on. They are curved, made by Race Ramps but are almost $150/pair and I would need 2 pairs. I have seen the same made from 2x4 alternating direction on each layer. I have seen folk make them as small as 12 x 14, and as large as 18 x 18. I am thinking I could put a piece of lumber behind and in front of the wheel to ascertain fore/aft dimension and width of tire plus 1.5 plus 2 lumber widths for the other dimension. Has anybody made any of these to use on their T Series? Dont like to be under the car when it is on axle stands, prefer to support it on its wheels unless I have to remove a wheel. There are lots of YouTube videos out there, just think of the dimensions, my thoughts are 18 fore/aft and about 14 the other way. 6 pieces high gets me about 7.5 or a shade higher. Those who are worried, 2x4s are very strong. Thanks, Peter PS. Might be better than HF axle stands. |

Peter, have you considered the approach of leaving the wheels on the deck and lifting the gearbox up through the cockpit? Bud |

Bud, it will come out through the inside, but, my fat ass has to get under to disconnect some things, like lower bell housing bolts.
I did this almost 2 years ago, just would like another 2-3 inches from my face, will be trying a lower roller to get under there too. Being it is RHD, steering an exhaust is over the other side, getting out on the left is easy enough a 71 year old did it alone, and took a few pills and beers later. Just trying ways to make this easier while the Treasury denies a lift is needed. Peter |

With the price of lumber lately, the Race Ramps @ 150 per pair may not be that expensive! 😳 |

We bought four $15 4-wheel furniture dollies from HF. Reinforced them with 2X12 tops and comfortably put the TD on them using a floor jack. Raises the car about 6-8 inches and allows easy movement about the garage. Jud |

Thanks Jud, do you have a picture? Peter |

I'll get one for you. Jud |

Thanks. Peter |

Here you go. Homemade and very crude but they held a TD nicely. You could make them a lot fancier (siderails to guide the tires, et.) but we wanted quick and dirty and these worked. Jud ![]() ![]() |

Thank you, I have a few of those dollies, even some lumber to build with chocking fore/aft. I could even remove the add-ones if SWMBO needs furniture moved at some time. Again, thank you. Peter |
