MG TD TF 1500 - Wheel Puller

Anyone know where I might be able to buy an inexpensive stud wheel puller for my 54 TF front wheels. I have one that I just cannot get off. I have been to 5 different auto parts stores who rent pullers and none of them have one that will fit. Need a spread of about 5 3/4 inches to fit over the studs. Most only go to 4.5. Have not been able to find one on-line.

Thanks for any help... John

I bought mine at NAPA. Not “Inexpensive “. But then that is a relative term.

John, see the thread Beginning TD restoration in the archives. It shows my wheel puller. Just pay the round trip shipping from Marietta GA. It weighs just under 10 pounds. It pulls on the studs. Bud

If you have an AutoZone in your area they will lend you a wheel puller. You have to leave a deposit and ot will be returned when you bring it back.

Bud, thanks for your offer but I decided to get my own. Found one that looks just like yours for $46 so I figure it's not that much more after factoring in shipping costs both ways. I finished my total restoration about 10 years ago but still look at this BB all the time and would like to thank you for all your good advice you have shared over the many many years with all of us. I could not have done the restoration without folks like you with all your help on this BB.

Sandy, I went to five different auto parts stores that had wheel puller lenders but they were either too small or the hook type which I did not want to use because this hub seems to be on there really tight. I got the other front one off with no problem.

Thanks again to all..... John

I made this a few years ago for the TD. Steel disc wheels. Like you I could not find the right kind of wheel puller. It uses one of those 3 legged pullers with the legs flipped so the hooks point out to grab the plywood ring.

Great idea. I was not smart enough to think of doing that.

John,
If your TF has wire wheels like my TD, you can use this puller form Amazon.

If you have access to machine tools and have a couple of extra knock-ons Left and Right - you can drill and tap a hole in the center for the fine thread center bolt and that will also pull the hub off the front spigots. Mine tends to leave the inner bearing on the spigot so the puller will get that off - but will normally damage the innermost oil seal.

Rod Jones

The three-armed puller shown by Rod can damage drums - I frequently have seen drums with pieces missing from the outer edges, due to this type of puller being used. In addition to damaging the drum, missing pieces also upset the balance of the unit.

Better to stick to the lug puller, as shown further above.

Just for info, these are the correct factory pullers for disc and wire wheels.

Here's the one I have.
