MG TD TF 1500 - Windscreen frame material.

I'm trying to get an email quote from a plating shop for the MG TD windscreen frame pieces. They are asking me what the frame pieces are made of. Anyone know the answer?

Thanks

When I had mine rechromed Tim I wasn't aware that the insert/spacer shown in the pic below was removable. The plating was done with it in situ. It didn't seem to affect it but maybe best to remove them prior to plating.

Peter, you had mentioned that in a thread in which I was looking for those pieces. Based on your comment then, I tried to remove the spacers when I was getting the frame ready for the platers. They wouldn't come out, at least not with the amount of force I was comfortable with. I guess mine will be shiny also. Thanks for the tip.

If the spacers don't easily come out let them be. You may scratch the frame trying to get them back in later if you force them out. It probably depends on if the frame was tightened down at some point to accommodate metric glass that started appearing in the 70's.

As a side note: FTFU sells true thickness glass for the TD/TF if you want to go that route.

Thanks Chris, that was my thinking. If I damaged a $500 chrome job you'd probably hear my reaction across the pond.

hi Tim

If you are a practical sort of guy I would suggest you get the plater to strip off the plating on your frame and then inspect it carefully for any cracks dents or poor threads. With a bit of skill the frame can be repaired and polished before being taken back for plating. This will reduce the cost considerably and produce a good finished job. A pristine plating job needs pristine preparation.
