MG TD TF 1500 - Windscreen glass template?

I attempted to help a friend install new glass in his TD windscreen yesterday. I He fell on it through an attic rafter. I successfully straightened the bent pieces but failed with the glass. He had the new piece cut patterned from the old shattered one, which was not original or exactly right. It seems to be a touch too wide side to side, and there are not cut-outs or relieved areas in the top for the spacers. We gave up and he is going to take it to the auto glass shop and let them try. Either a picture, drawing, or template would be helpful. Late TD wiper in middle. Thanks, George

The last one I had cut, I just took the windscreen frame to the glass shop with the packing spacers in place in the assembled frame along with the glazing rubber and asked them to cut one to fit. Told them to just cut it and I would install it.

Make up a simple template from thin plywood, with any cutouts, and take this to a local glazier. It won't cost very much for a new screen to be cut from laminated glass. When you fit the glass to the frame use black silicone sealant rather than a rubber gasket. It is MUCH easier.

I just made a template from paper and that was perfectly adequate. I made it 8mm bigger than the frame all around and it fitted perfectly.

Thanks, the owner is taking the whole thing to the glass shop in the morning. Likely they can figure it out. George

My template was from a cardboard box George. Stiff enough & a similar thickness to the glass to allow a test fit or two. Suggest masking the glass to protect it while the corners etc are being cut. Mine was cut twice because of scratches caused by glass chips on the glaziers carpeted bench while he was cutting the corners etc. I used Jan's approach but also recommend painting the edges & the buried sides of the glass black. This protects the laminate, prevents the ingress of moisture & gives a better aesthetic. If replacing the chrome corner posts those supplied by Moss don't allow the mitered corners of the frame to meet perfectly & should be avoided. They are about 3/8" out of whack! Cheers
