MG TD TF 1500 - Wood Jig at Abingdon

I found this photo on the "MG factory Abingdon remembered" Facebook page.

Couple of pictures taken on my visit to Hutsons in the UK when ordering my TC body tub. A real old fashioned body workshop. No qualms in recommending them. Just a staisfied customer. It arrived ready panelled and with doors hung.

Lonnie - Thank you for reproducing that image; I don't remember seeing it before. The mind boggles when trying to figure out all the pieces and how they work!

And the Hutson video on YouTube is also fascinating; I especially like how the craftsman "tweaks" the door with his knee to get a good fit! With the GB Pound down, this might be a good time to get a Hutson tub.

If anyone gets the chance to watch Hutsons video on their building process it's quite interesting. Amazing how they will build a complete tub covered in sheet metal ready to put on the chassis. Pricey, but what isn't. PJ

$8,300, the current price of a full TC tub with doors and hinges, doesn't seem bad to me. Maybe another $700 for shipping, and that's it!

Probably fair for the work involved versus doing it yourself. But still, that's nearly ten grand of cost added to a restoration and you haven't even painted it yet. I'll be facing this dilemma in the near future on the TC I'm restoring.
Steve Simmons

Steve, Faced that dilemma with mine, but having read up on the problems others have had working on a tub both trying to "cut in" in new parts and then the steel panel work and making the doors fit right for me it was a easy decision. And I've got a reasonable wood workshop and have built everything from kitchen furniture and bespoke stairs. You get what you pay for and on the assumption you are doing the car for you and not to sell on and think you'll make a profit I highly recommend it. It's only when you look closely at the timber work and the various contours of the frame you realize it's not a simple DIY job. However I appreciate it's down to budget and being able to justify it. For me it's done and forget about it. Incidently I don't know where it was destined for but I saw a crated tub ready for export when I visited. PLUS with the virus now's the time potentially for a deal!!!

Did you notice that the rear floor is in place?
Bruce Cunha

Can anyone discern if its a TC or TD?
M Magilton

Right hand drive TD. Notice the opening for the glovebox.
Christopher Couper

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that this would not be at the MG factory as they did not build the bodies.

Wasn’t the coach builder in Cowley (?)

This is from a Nuffield brochure published between 1945 and 1948....

Thanks Nick, Bill, and LaVerne -

I have a lot to learn about MG production facilities. I apologize for my misleading title that says the photo was taken at Abingdon.

Nick - nice article.

This Moss Motoring issue tells more about the factories that supplied bodies, engines, gearboxes, etc to Abingdon.

Nick: Great contribution from your collection.

Who would have thought that all the soft goods would be put onto the body before the cowl was installed.

At first I thought those were TC's but now I am not certain. The second car seems like it has a one piece rear window. Did the 49 TCs have a solid rear window?
Christopher Couper

Coventry. Thank you. I new it started with a C and ended with a Y. Lol. I should have looked at a map to figure it out. Learn something new every day.
W A Chasser

They do appear to be TCs, and yes late models had a single rear window, which increase visibility with the hood erected.
Steve Simmons

Thanks Steve. I thought that the late cars had a solid window but was not 100% sure. It's hard to tell in the image what the windscreen brackets were too.
