MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG Engine Rebuild - Queensland AUST

Dear All,

I have an XPAG engine in Queensland, Australia that needs a rebuild. Does anyone know a good engine builder? It is a TD/C and I want it rebuilt as factory. But for a few bits from Tom Lange - i.e gaskets, bolts, plugs etc.

Cheers,

Ross

Ross,
I can recommend Peter Fogarty in Mortdale in Sydney he being an ex mechanic from the Leyland factory and having his own business for many years . He now works from his small workshop at his home. Very knowledgable and I highly recommend him. Give me a call in Sydney on 02 95331341 or 0410531341 if you wish to discuss.

Hi John and Ross. I was just on the phone to Peter yesterday and he is stepping back from engine rebuilds these days and is concentrating now on SU rebuilds. I'm dropping a pair of original TD Mk 2, 1 1/2" SU's to him on Friday so he can mess about with them. I know the purists will hate me but I've just hit 70 and I'm getting too old to care. I reckon I've just got 15 years of driving ahead of me and I plan to make the most of every minute. While I'm there I'm using his bat cave to hang upside down for about 5 minutes to help with my back issue. He has the gear to release the pressure on the spine and he swears by it.

In relation to your engine rebuild Ross I had the same question asked of me at the T Type Tech Day yesterday and I referred the inquirer to Bruce Smith at Sportsparts in Sydney. He doesn't rebuild but does have his finger on the pulse and and can steer you in the right direction.
Cheers

MG Automotove at Brendale, just north of Brisbane should be able to do that work. If they are too busy you could try Chilton Engine Works in Woolloongabba in Brisbane. Google should provide contact details for both.

Good Luck

Peter-
Good move with the 1 1/2" carbs
I did a head for a mate last year, the usual TF valve sizes, cleaned the ports up and machined a fair whack off it, opened the manifold up to suit the larger carbs and it transformed the feel of the car
On hills where it used to need going back to 3rd it now happily pulls up in 4th
I reckon it would happily pull a taller rear axle now, but that would defeat the purpouse of the increased pulling power
Interesting part of this project was the inlet manifold material, I found it a much harder material to grind at than the cylinder head itself
Also, your SU man would probably know anyway, They list the same su needles for both 1250 and 1500 TFs--on 1500s they're ok but on 1250s they are borderline lean and with any engine mods like cleaning up ports, freer flowing exhaust etc ,it tips them into the too lean area
just something to think about-----------

Thanks Willy. Peter is a great bloke who lives for mucking about with MG's. He has a YT that turns passengers white. I've had the manifold from a TC machined to suit. Apologies for bending your thread Ross. Good luck with the donk. Cheers

Ross, I am on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. I have used Reagan Engineering in Caloundra on a number of occasions and have been happy with his attitude and he is easy to deal with. TF 2071 has only 20miles on the clock since his work on the block and head but so far so good. Tighe Cams of Wacol reground my original cam and are an old established firm.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Hi Ross, where is your XPAG engine, in Brisbane, or north (on Sunshine Coast) or south (on Gold Coast?

Chris and Tony have given a few good options in Brisbane and to the north. I am to the south on Gold Coast and work with Classic Car Clinic in Biggera Waters for my mechanical work. My block was sent to a reputable engineering company (although not one mentioned earlier) in Brisbane to get it line bored and crank etc balanced, but I had to take it back a couple of times to get things fixed.

Peter, I agree with Peter Foggarty and his supercharged MGYT, very quick and a hill climb winner.

cheers

Peter Foggarty and his supercharged MGYT, very quick and a hill climb winner! Of course he has one of my Roller Lifter cam kits! He was so impressed that within 6 months of installing his he sold another 6 or so of my Abingdon Performance Ltd. cams to his customers!
