MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG oil pick up assembly differences
This may not be news to some of you but it was to me. The TD1250 , engine 1578 I have been working on threw a rod in the very early 60's and it trashed the oil pick up canister. While it is possible that it might be repairable I thought that it might be desireable to source a later pickup to use that had the improvements with the snorkel. Hugh Pite correctly pointed out that the late assemblies were fixed to the side of the sump with 4 bolts instead of two.
Since that time I have discovered that during the production of the XPAG that the early finned sump was fitted with a two bolt flange pick up and the can was modified with the two fixing straps fastened to the baffle plate, without the addition of the snorkel as seen on Dave Braun's TD15470 engine 15613. The next change I can verify was with TF4315 that I had worked on a few years back, Engine 34252. This engine also had throw a rod and was replaced with a TD block. The owner had the finned sump with a hole in the side and the oil pick up assembly in his barn. The oil pick up assembly was still fastened to the side of the sump with two bolts but now had the snorkel assembly on the bottom of the can. This would be the desireable replacement for the early TD1250 we are working on. Unfortunatley it was also hammered when the rod let go as well as the baffle plate was nowhere to be found. Finally I have my own TF to compare with TF3973 with engine 33613. This engine has both the 4 bolt to the sump and the snorkel pick up. |

And next this image from Dave Braun's TD. This is from a finned sump. Two bolt fixing to the sump and now has the fixing to the baffle plate. Photo used by permission.

This assembly was from TF4315. Although the photo doesn't show it, it uses the snorkel but still has the two bolt fixing to the sump.

And lastly from my TF...the 4 bolt to the sump arrangement. Which had its own repair work prior to my ownership.

Thank you Frank but I have discovered that it will not fit in a smooth sump. |

LaVerne. TD 4139 (Engine 4426 Flat Bottom) had the early pickup without the horn. Engine 7494, also a flat bottom had the horn pickup. When I blew up 4426, I bought 7494 as the replacement. That was the first time I had seen the horn. Its been some years since I installed it and I don't remember how it attached. If I pull the pan during the restoration, I will document how it is attached in the pan. |

Just picked up Malcolm Green's T Series Restoration Guide. In his list of production changes, he says that at TD 7576, the oil pickup was changed to the central position in the sump, Don't know if that includes the horn. Finned pan was not introduced until TD 14948 |
