MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG rear oil seal modification
Brown and Gammons have a rear crank oil seal as a modification to prevent an oil leak in this area. It is shown on page 4 of their TD/TF parts catalogue. Has anyone fitted this modification to their engine and were there any identification marks on the seal? has anyone any experiece with this modification. Thanks. John |

Hi John I've just had this seal fitted by B&G whilst my TF was in their workshop for other major costly surgery. So I can't say anything about identification marks, and it's early days yet but no leaks! David |

Sounds good David. It is just the fact of timing to get one sent from B& G when I may be able to source one from Consolidated Bearings here in Sydney for they are only 5kms from me. John |

The seal is actually a kit (similar to the one moss sells). I have one on my TF 1500 (B&G) that I put on at the rebuild. Pay close attention to how/where the seal rides on the flange. I had to take my engine out twice to get it fixed. At issue was that the seal could be pushed too far into the housing and the lip would no longer make contact with the flange. The machine shop made me a bushing to put behind the seal in the housing that would keep the seal in the proper orientation to stay on the flange. Once this was done, the seal has been trouble free. You also need to check that a regrind has not put the flange out of true (there is a post about this " crankshaft runout" ). Also if the block has been line bored, a seal housing located by C/S screws will be out of line. If located by a dummy and secured with cap heads you may have a chance. I still prefer a properly fitted original seal and a slight drip. Ray TF 2884 |

I bought the complete kit from B&G including a Speedisleeve. So far it seems to be fine. Dave H |

Thank you all for your help. I have gone through the archives on the subject where I should have gone to in the first instance. I am yet to decide which way to proceed however I have another avenue to persue where a friend of mine who owns a Y type made modifications to both the front and rear seal areas and as soon as I know what they are I will post the results. I was at his place yesterday when he just returned from a 200km run with no leaks. John |
