MG TD TF 1500 - XPEG Dip Stick Part Number

My dip sticks number is 24407 and wondering if it is the proper one. The book says my engine takes 5 quarts of oil, with my dip stick it takes 6 to the fill line, correct or not? I get no dripping out of the back bearing with 6 in it. PJ

Was the engine dismantled, and if so was the dipstick tube removed? I ask because when it is put back in, it is necessary to push it right down until it bottoms out. If not, the dipstick sits higher up than it should.

Dave, yes the engine was rebuilt, by an ex MG dealer mechanic. It was done just before I bought it and have no idea if the tube was removed. I would think if he removed it, he would have put it back in the proper position. Do you have the measurement the tubes top end sets above the block? PJ

My June 1958 TD parts list has X24407 for the dip stick, but it doesn't mention the larger finned sump, which was introduced within the TD production run.
Moss only list one dipstick, using their own part number, for both the TD and TF, not mentioning either the change in sump capacity or the increase in engine size.
Brown & Gammons only list the X24407 dipstick for both the TD and TF, but the page shows both sumps.
My Scientific Publications TD-TF-MGA workshop manual lists 9 pints for the TD (I assume unfinned sump), 10 pints for the TF (finned sump), and 10.5 pints for the TF1500 (same finned sump).
Not sure if the above helps or hinders.

Paul,
Go to the archives. ,,, search for the phrase. DIP STICK
I got 8 hits which give all kinds of info on lengths, capacities, why there are two different ones, where they enter the sump etc isn't it 6 with a filter ??

The TF sump holds 6.3 U.S. quarts.

Pages 4 and 32 in the TF & TF1500 Operation Manual AKD658A says that the engine holds 10.5 Imperial quarts, 6 liters, or 12.6 U.S. pints.

Agreeing with RA Wilson again ...

You have the correct dipstick. The TF Service Parts List AKD804 lists it as part #X24407.

It also lists a felt washer for the dipstick. Felt washer #TA13455. Makes sense.

Thanks a bunch guys! You made my day! So everything is correct and I'll just ad another quart, or what ever it takes to bring the level to just below the full mark, which is where I had it before. You guys are the best, thanks again. PJ

Must admit, I had forgotten about US pints being smaller. So;
TD unfinned; 9 Imp pints, 10.8 US pints.
TD finned, TF finned; 10 Imp pints, 12 US pints.
TF1500 finned; 10.5 Imp pints, 12.6 US pints.
As the TF1500 requires more oil than the TF1250, but has the same sump and dipstick must mean that the mark on the dipstick is an absolute max level.

The finned sump is longer but not deeper, so no difference in the TD/TF dipstick. All comments above right on. George

I was puzzled by the two capacities for the finned sump, so I did some more checking in old UK publications.
Motor Trader june 1952 service booklet for TD, sump capacity - early, 9 imp pts, 5.1 lts - later (assume finned), 10.5 imp pts, 6 lts.
Motor Trader june 1955 service booklet for TF, sump capacity - 10.5 imp pts, 6 lts.
Safety Fast data sheet sept 1970 for TD, sump capacity - 9 imp pts (only one capacity, so tough luck if you had the later sump, and Safety Fast was an MG Car Club publication).
Safety Fast data sheet dec 1970 for TF, sump capacity - 10.5 imp pints.
No mention at all of the 10 imp pts capacity, and I thought the Scientific Publications manual, an Australian publication, was issued in conjunction with the MG Car Company.
