Triumph TR3 - Fitting the glove box

Just bought new glove box frm Moss Motors.
My question is, how does it fix to the dash? Does it just screw in? Also is it meant to have and rear support?

Thanks

Paul

I'll have to check it out next time I'm over at the car that has the original in it. But I seem to remember those U shaped, folded over things that clip over the holes and short ovalhead philips screws. No support bracket hooked to the back of the box, again by memory.

Is the box made of cardboard or plastic? I'm thinking of making one out of plastic gallon jug material, and lining it with carpet-like stuff. (To beat the moisture problem.) I made a glovebox out of thin aluminum, lined. But as a project one day, I want to do the plastic one, too.

I've made door panels and gas tank hiders out of those fiberglass panels to line your shower. Works great, won't turn to mush. The texture looks good for the gas panel, not concours, but I like it. For the door pockets, I think the gallon jug plastic would work well, too. Just rivet together like the original. The carpet stuff is what they use to cover speakers, and I like that it kind of stiffens the box, too.

I might get a look at the box for your question tomorrow.

Cheers Tom,
I had a good look last night and I think you are correct.
I suppose at first glance I though I'd bought more sub-standard Moss parts and got annoyed. Seems like everything I buy from Moss almosts fits but not quite. Does anyone else have this problem?

I did something a little different. I used the correct folded metal clips to make sure it was in place. But I took it a step further. I used a peice of 1" by 1/8"aluminum plate, which I purchased from the hardware store. I measured the distance from the support bracket for the heater, to the inside wall of the passenger side. A right angle bend 3&1/2 inches with a full U bend existing of one inch. I then hooked the U bend on to the inside wall and rested the other flat end on the heater support bracket. To make sure nothing moved I drilled a 3/16 hole through the aluminum and into the center of the box. With a small nut, bolt, a pair of washers and a spring washer, I fastend it all together. Looks neet, it supporta a whole lot of stuff in my glove box and I know it won't collapse.

Seems like most parts from anywhere are an "almost" fit. But if they save you some work making them up yourself, I guess they're worth it. I love to tinker with stuff, so a TR is a great thing to have around.

I did visit the TR3 that hasn't been on the road for 20 years, but forgot the key to look inside the glovebox. From underneath, it does look like the folded nuts hooked to the box itself. Not exactly oval headed screws, but close.

It requires 2 truss headed sheetmetal screws that secure the glove box to the rail below the door. They screw up from the bottom and are similar to the truss head screws that also hold the heater brackets under the dash edge and at the other end against the back of the battery box.

When I bought my TR3A new in 1958, the glove box did not have any extra support (TS 27489 LO) and after a lot of rough gravel road rallying between 1959 to 1965, the glove box (and contents) fell down into the RHS footwell. I don't know if later TR3As and 3Bs had a bracket, but I bought one identical to what Robert describes above from Roadster Factory several years ago.

Aloha Paul,
I just came across this thread, so maybe it's old news. I remember using some sort of small bracket at the back of my TR3A glovebox (In storage in SC though, so can't check). If you have an original TR3 parts manual, it's page 106, AN28 (Bracket assembly, cubby box support, rear). Also, Moss # 633-080 on the "TR2-3B Dash" page, but I have a 2002 catalog.

I made one out of thin alluminum and used the original short screws that went around the hole for glove box in the dash board. painted it with winkle paint and it looks real good, real solid too. No back support. I did the same for the side pockets in the doors.
