Triumph TR3 - Paint Specs

I am looking to paint my 3A in a "Pale Yellow" colour that I believe is similar to Ivory White.
Does anyone have a paint spec I could use.

Thanks

Page 37 of Bill Piggott's book "Original Triumph TR" lists the following for Primrose Yellow:-

Dockers CGC45 or CHX38, ICI Hilux M-048-3220 Plus others.

For "Pale Yellow" he reports that he couldn't find anything in the records. In January 1959, about Comm No. TS-37000, he states that pale yellow replaced Primrose Yellow. If yours is before TS 37000, you should use Primrose Yellow if you are planning to be "as original as you can."

I have shown the table on page 37 to my local paint supplier. He tells me the numbers are old and out of date. The paint colour spec that I am looking for is for the 3A shown on page 34. I rang Bill Piggot on his mobile last week for assistance( He was driving TS2 at the time) but he could not help.

I have been checking with other members I know with "pale yellow" TR3A's. One says his is Masarati yellow. Another took the colour for a US Ford 1970. I saw a General Motors (Olsmobile, I think) about the same colour. A TR-250 I saw has a very similar colour. A call to the registrar for TR-5's and TR-250's at the TR Register is another lead.

Another California late TR3A owner says his was originally pale yellow and if you like, he can try to scrape some off an area up behind somewhere that he can send you for comparison.

One chap in USA replied to me that pale yellow is the same colour as primrose yellow and that it was only a name change. Maybe because some people didn't know what shade "primrose" yellow looks like.

Or you can take Bill Piggott's book to a paint store where they can match the "formulation" after scanning the pale yellow colour from Dick Ames' car on page 34. The scanning is computerized and the mix required appears as a print-out. You might want him to scan the photos of the same car also shown on page 12 and 13, also page 25 and 27.

Since Bill Piggott can find no number for the "Pale yellow" and all the paint codes listed are out of dat (unknown), any close colour you like can be as close as you want to the "Original" colour.

Best of luck

Hi:My '58 TR3 was originally primrose yellow and in order to duplicate the original colour I went to UAP(NAPA)Auto Supplies and looked up the colour chart for early "70s Jaguar, selected primrose yellow and they made it up from their stock formulation.

Hi Tony,
I too would like to "find" the paint spec. for Pale Yellow.
Please note Bill Piggot's book (New edition) states that Pearl White & Pale Yellow appear to be near to identical. He states the last car with Pearl White was TS42306 and the first car with Sebring White was TS42369. I guess he is infering that Sebring White replaced Pearl White. My car is Sebring White which is nothing like the Pearl White/Pale Yellow cars in the book. It's more of the "Old English White type" much more White than Cream.

Have a look at :- http://www.vtr.org/maintain/paint-charts/acme2.jpg
How well these charts have aged and how well they reproduce via the Web is anyone's guess. On my computer screen Sebring White has a blue tinge, definetely not right!

Good hunting!
