Triumph TR3 - silent-bloc bush
What is the best way to remove my old silent-bloc bush's from the center tie rod? I had no trouble getting the fulcrum pin and rubber bush out but the steel outer-bush remained and I don't want to damage the center tie-rod. |

If it's out the car, put in in a vice and use a die grinder to remove the rest of it. A die grinder is like a "Dremmel" but the bits have a 1/4" diameter shank. My earlier one was electric powered but I now have one that is driven by comperessed air. |

Use a saws all or saber saw with a thin blade to just cut through the bushing in two places. Be careful not to cut to deep and damage the center tie rod link. This splits the remaining metal bushing and makes it easy to remove with a little help from a small chisel and/or drift. |

You could even use a hacksaw putting the blade on after putting it through the hole in the tie rod link. Just do not cut more after you have split the bushing. hjr |

I got the steel outer bush out of my car by using the replacement silent-bloc bush to push it out with a press. Worked like a charm. Just make sure that you back up the new silent-bloc with something that does NOT impinge on the pin sticking out of the top. Alternately, if you have a lathe, just turn a mamdrel and use that. Thanks everyone! I used a hacksaw blade to cut through the bush and then was able to push it out with a small punch. Donnie |
