Triumph TR3 - Steering worm replacement

Hi all,

My TR3a 1958 with rigid adjustable steering column has a worn/damaged steering worm.
Has anyone experience with replacement.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wim.

Wim - I know someone who had his replaced. The TR repair shop sent it out to another shop with a lathe and they turned it off. They charged a fortune to do this. I think it can come off with a pressure jacking table press. About 15 years ago, I bought a kit from Protek in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, UK with a spring loaded peg and a new top cover for the steering box. If your worm is not too worn, this kit will solve your problems. Maybe Neil Revington sells them as well.

Hi Don, thanks for your comment. To get the old one off is not the problem i think, but getting a new one upon the column is another story i'm afraid of.
I let you know how thinks worked out.

If I couldn't find a good used one, I think this might be a candidate for the rack and pinion kit. Not that I think rack and pinion is a better system for the TR3. I'd watch ebay, there's a short box on there now including the connector for the other shaft. Might be easier overall than the worm replacement.

Tell us what happened to the old steering gear. Maybe there's a machinist that would build the worm back up. I know it's not something to be done halfassed, but there are some miracle workers out there.

With the cars being somewhat more valuable in the UK, there may be more help there than in the US.

Wim-You might contact "The Roadster Factory" (TRF). I think they can weld a new worm gear on your column.

Hi Don, Tom and BTP,
I called the salesman from Anglo Parts in Holland yesterday about the steering worm. He said that replacemend of a new one is no big deal for his company, takes about 15 minutes. Simple pressing off the old one and pressing on a new one. In stock by Anglo Parts headquarter in Belgium.
I will go for it.

Thanks again for your comments, Wim.

Wim - Can you send us the adress, phone number and/or e-mail address of Anglo Parts. I may want to take advantage of this.

Thanks for the info, Wim. Tell us how it went, would you?

Hi all, ok the salesman told me it is piece of cake to replace the worm. Well, his brother the craftsman was not pleased on first attempt, because the old one didn't come off easy. His press is to short for the Rigid (one-piece adjustable) type column i have. The end of the rod is conical and holds the worm tight on the column which has a splined end. Because it was to late a had to leave it in the shop, so no pictures alas. Whats the trick. You need a heavy piece of pipe a little bigger in diameter as the column. Slide this pipe over the column and catch the end of the column in a good bench-vice. Then heat the end red hot and knock the old worm of with the pipe. So don't file the conical end of, because after installing the new worm you need to fasten it on the column again with a conical punch! A weld can brake easely when you hit a pavement.
Next monday i will pick up the column, so i can take some pictures.
