Triumph TR3 - Turn Signal Wiring

Please help, I am at my wits end!
I have a 1960 TR3A with the following wiring coming from the steering column harness:
Gree/Yellow
Green/Brown
Light Green/Red

I have two schematics, one trom my Haynes Manual for TR2, TR3, TR2A, TR4 and one from the internet for TR2 and TR3. Neither schematic shows a Green/Brown wire. Each drawing shows a green wire that I don't have, and I tried substituting the Green/Brown for it and nothing happens.

I have parking lights, but other configurations gave me turn signals without the turn signal swith being activated.

It has helped me to take a blank sheet of paper and draw your own diagram of only the circuits you need. It kind of focuses your attention on what's really going on, without all those other distracting lines crossing each other in wierd places. It might be easier to make a photocopy of the diagram, blow it up, and use colored markers to highlight the circuits you will be working with.

When you're successful, it will look really easy. And really easy to forget what you did to fix it. But it will work, and you can go on to other repairs.

Takes patience to work on classic cars. You may have to check the operation of the control head switches with an ohmmeter. All the bullet connectors and light sockets need to be cleaned. All grounds must be good. New bulbs may even help. A mistake I made when I first started tracing wires in my TR was that the light bulb filament grounds the wire. Duh! Thought I had shorts in the wires. But that's how you learn.

Thanks Tom but I already tried that as I am manager of a worldwide electronics company Service Department. If the colors don't match, it is very hard to make ends meet.

John-According to my owners manual, the green/red wire from the control head goes to a splicer terminal that contains a green wire and then the green/red wire feeds the left turn signals.

John, I made a drawing when dismanteling the control head. I will mail it to you if you want. Wim.

John,

Heres my two cents, I'll take a look at my 59 when I get home.

Green/yellow probably green/and discolored white that looks yellow? to right hand turn signal.

Light green and red to left hand turn signal.

Green and Brown to horn, beep beep?

Check out http://www.rucompatible.com/triumph/

look in TR2-3 wiring diagrams section.

I believe Harry's info is on the mark. I got a very helpful schematic from a TRF TR#3 Glove box Manual, which I have misplaced. I have copies and would fax it to you if you want to give me a number. It is for post 18913 cars when some changes occurred. Also check Terri Wakeman's website for a wire color chart.

John,

After a quick review of the Bently manual wiring diagram, a quick peek under the hood, and review of my notes concerning the signal light wiring.

My 59 TR3A has four wires exiting the harness coming from the control head and out of the bottom of the worm gear housing. Your car should have the same.

Assuming you have a left hand driver all wiring connections from the control head leads are made to the driver side main wire harness located on the driver side directly above the positive ground leads and to the rear of the driver side horn.

Green/Brown wire from control head plugs into the driver side main harness single wire connector green/brown wire. This wire is the connection to the directional indicator flasher unit mounted on the passenger side firewall that makes the bulbs blink.

Green/White from control head (your Green/yellow) (mine looks yellow as well) plugs into the double connector with the two single Green/White wires coming out from the driver side main harness. This operates the right side blinkers.

Green/Red from control head plugs into a double connector with two Green/Red wires coming in from the main driver side harness. The left side blinker light also attaches to this double wire connector.

And the missing fourth wire which I mislead you on in my last post.(maybe it was cut off and is hiding in the cloth harness or Worse yet maybe it was broken off in the stator tube?)

Brown/Black which plugs into the double connector with the two Brown/Black wires coming out of the driver side main harness which clearly can be seen to connect to and operate the horns.

Hope this helps, BTW If the wires are not matched up by color on the passenger side wiring harness as well then the lights will not light correctly either.

John, I never said it was easy!

A big THANKS to all of you who helped. The turn signals are working as is all the other electrical. I know it is Lucas, and the question is as always, "For How Long". Again guys you have helped me and thanks.

Re: colors matching. When I got the TR4, the taillights were not working right. No wonder, the wires were all painted red, like all the wires under the hood. Once they were scraped, I could hook them back up the way they were (before the dingaling that unhooked them, then painted them and just plugged whatever into whatever). Amazing things happen to these cars before we get them. I have hours and hours invested in putting the car back in shape, but it repays me tenfold.

Yours will be a joy to you too.
Tom
