Triumph TR3 - z numbers

Hi Tr Friends,

Finnaly after 5 years of restoration, my Tr3 smallmouth is ready to go....

We went to Germany to put the first 500 miles on the clock last weekend, a very nice weekend trip...

I still have a question about the Z numbers on the chassis.. does anybody know what the z number means.

I've seen different Z numbers Z-25, Z 31 etc...

Hi Remo -Congratulation on getting the TR3 on the road.
I am sure you turned many heads on your recent trip.
Immagine hopping in the TR and going to Germany for the weekend. I can just barely get out of Alberta on a weekend. Traveling in Eruope must be fantastic.
Re the Z numbers, I quote from Bill Piggots book
Original Triumph Tr2-3-3A
"There is no chassis number as such: many chassis carry a small plate on the front chassis cross member stamped 'Z28', but this number has no significance. Some chassis have been seen with 'Z26' or 'Z27', but 'Z28'is more common."
Send me a picture of your car in Germany. I am guessing you might have taken a few. Primrose is still my favorite color.
Keep driving!

Hi Brain,

Thanks for responding on the question about the z-numbers.. The only thing I heard about the numbers is that the early numbers are the tr2 and so on....
Someone in England told me that the numbers were to wich county the car was made for...

I'll have put some pictures on the net so you can see the car.

As you know Holland is a small country and the place we are living is near Nijmegen 8 km from the German border.
So just go to Germany for the weekend is a nice trip.

Remo Your car looks fantastic. You must be very pleased!

Nice job, Remo! I love the low front shot. The smallmouths have a more forward leaning look, and that really shows it off. Your interior work is fantastic, I can't find a flaw anywhere (so easy to make a ripple here and there), looks inviting. The steering wheel is nice, and the open book key is a nice touch. I like the color, too. My wife would tell me "It's not red!" but there are so many reds, I can amuse myself with that, I guess.

You've definitely done a nicer job than I have on any of mine. Have fun!
Tom

Remo - I have a Z number on my front cross frame. I think it is Z29 but it was 16 years ago that I last saw it. The one I'm dong now has the body off but I can't read the number on the small plate. Both were imported to Canada when new so I don't think it represents where the car was made or sold.

I believe that there may have been several frame manufacturers and each put his own number on the frame for future identification if needed.

BTW, your TR3 looks fantastic.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the responds, I can only say...I've done my best..

Tom
It's not a red!! but Blonds do have more fun..."
(just kidding Tom.)
Do you have a picture of your car?

Don, Your story about several manufactures sounds very acceptable. I'm trying to find out if the numbers got something to do with the years of manufactering....
I've heard that Triumph also sold frames to different countries like south africa and Belgium or other European countries.

I have a small and a wide mouth TR3, but haven't driven either for a while, though I've been tinkering with both. I have an early TR4 to drive to work, etc. I suppose I could shoot a pic in the garage, not too proud of all the junk around it, tho. I have finished the fiberglass hardtop on the smallmouth, tho. And sidescreens are almost redone. So if the TR4 has major troubles, or I finally sell it, that's probably the one that will get used again soon. Again, great lookin' car! I never noticed the Z #'s.
Tom

Hi Tom,

What's the condition of the tr4?
You could sent a picture to my e-mail adress...

Then I 'll send you a few of the engine of my car.

Cheers
