Triumph TR6 - 45 MCHH Weber Carb Conversion

I was going to post this at the end of my brake posting but it is a totally different subject.

I have removed the vacuum switch in the upper rad hose and plugged the vac on the dis and rear carb. Quite a bit of petrol leaked out of that lower fitting on the carb.

Currently flushing the brake sys.

Next are the carbs. Both are leaking damper fluid. I have rebuild kits but seriously thinking about changing to the Weber side draft conversion(2 X 45 MCHH Weber Conversion Triumph TR-6). I have talked to a gentleman in VA that has had them on for over a year now and swears by them. The two things he would not remove are those carbs and a Pertronix ign system. He has noticed improved performance and trouble free carbs. I am inclined to make the same changes. Not looking for high performance just reliability. The Paltech Hitachi SU conversion is tempting but the price tag is a little steep compared to the Webers. I looked thru the archives and found no mention of the Weber 45 MCHH conversion. I have seen it on other sites and the conversion looks pretty straight forward. Any one have any comments?

Mostly people spending time to set them up.
I ,offhand, can't remember if anyone has spent the time on a dyno to set them up properly yet

Bill, try this on for size.

Went for a ride in when out at Don Ks home. All I gotta say is...what a rush.

Let me just say . That was not mine belonged to an old poster named Dave Johnston.
Still touch base with him now and again

Don't know if I missed the boat here, but I installed the 45 MCHH kit on my '76 last year, & it changed everything. More power, steadier idle, easier to tune. I did have some issues with the linkage, but it just takes a little tinkering. Can't say enough about this conversion. Best thing I could have done.

TG, you post anywhere else?
DON KELLY

No....should I?

Don,

You're probably thinking about the DCOE (side draft), IDA, IDF (both down drafts) types with interchangable everything including venturi which do require set up. Seeing that Weber doesn't offer the assortment of parts for the MCHH, I would say that they are much more like the DG(x)V series where different sub-models are set up for specific applications.

Steve, I was just wondering if he post other places as there are a couple of other people with those on and since the signatures people use are so cryptic, I was wondering if I've communicated with him in the past.

Two things I will comment on:

1) Leaky dashpots are pretty easy to fix. Yeah, it's a little bit tricky, but really easy overall.

2) Not interested in performance, but reliability. The Z-S carbs are very reliable, maybe just need a rebuild. That said, I've heard of lots of folks with Webers talk about increased performance. I've not driven a TR6 fitted with them, but that's a performance upgrade that's been around for a long time. If you are talking about the Weber downdrafts, I've heard don't waste your $$$.

I'm a regular whiner here, so you've probably offered me advice in the past. BTW, my 4a, which has the original Zenith carbs, runs like a champ, with no probs, but it's been my experience that once you fiddle with the newer ZS units, they will drive you crazy. I had mine off and apart three friggin' times -by the book, mind you - & I still couldn't get them to behave. Bung the Webers on and Bob's Yer Uncle.....
T.G. Lawson

Well, I use a couple of tricks with the Z-S carbs: disable the throttle by-pass valves, and disable the temp compensators. Uncle Bob approves...
