Triumph TR6 - 55 amps or 75 amps

I want to replace my electrically challenged 45 amp Lucas alternator with either a 55 amp Bosch or a 75 amp Bosch. Which should I buy? Is the 75 amp too powerful for a 1974 TR6?
Advice/ experience gratefully accepted.
P. Noel

I don't think you could "overpower" anything...if it doesn't need that much it just won't use it.
JT White

I concur with JT. If you have 75 amp unit, the regulator will control what you need and may never need the 75 amps.

What extras do you have on the Car? I would only think a powerful amp and sub woofer may need the extra power Maybe an after market AC unit.

So, what're the options for a drop in, perfect fit, electrically the same, alternator? Preferably one that is chromed, can be chromed or powder coated?? Need high amps too, of course.

Chrome equals heat absorption/retention...I steer clear of chrome for under bonnet applications...just my $.02

Doug, with the Masters set up, it's prewired for the GM version. Stop your shopping and check out Jegs or Summit or the like for a chrome one if your into bling. You'll need a different adjusting bar. That's available in chrome to if you like.

Don,
Bling is not the issue. Reliability and longevity is. What's the GM model number?

There has been a lot of chatter on the 6pack forum about hight output alt.-some as high as 95A. Definitly overkill and unless the wiring from the alt to the battery is upgraded, it could cause a fireworks display if the alt was trying to charge a dead battery.
I have used a 63 amp delco SI for many years without a problem. It even survived a major dead short when the bat. hold down bar hit the bat. terminal and the top of the bat. blew off with small flames for effect. The spouse was not impressed. No major damage except for spouses opinion of car.

It's the one Dan suggest.
It's the SI model that Berry mentions. available in different amperage.
Berry. Doug's installing Dan's block so he's fine.
Berry, you going to any of the NW shows this year?
DON KELLY

Don-I will probably be at ABFM Sun., but won't do the ATDI in BC as I will be in the process of becoming a grandfather.

Here's a picture of my 65 amp chromed out gm alternater. If you build your car right, you won't have any heat problems. I'm running a 400 watt(@4ohms)amplifier with a 12' woofer. What I learned is that if I peg the amp gauge needle, or smell something burning, then I need to turn down the stereo!!! Email me if you need any more info.

Berry, which show?Portland or Bellevue?
DON KELLY

Don-Portland, Labor Day weekend.
BTP Price

Sunday is the swap meet. car show is Sat.
DON KELLY

Are you guys going to Bellevue this saturday?
benji

Benji,
Impressive. Where'd you get it or did you had it chromed after purchasing? Also what the gauge near your oil pressure switch?

Doug Baker

Alternator is a chromed off the shelf item from your local parts store. It's made by Powermaster. As for the gauge, because I installed my fuel pump in the engine compartment, I need to watch if I lose fuel pressure. Therefore, if you'll notice in the image from the previous post, the gauge that you are referring to is after the fuel pump. If you look again, there is also a fuel gauge before going into the carbs.
