Triumph TR6 - Adjusting convertible tops for easy closing

Hello everyone,
Hope you all had a good winter !
We are seen serious signs of spring here in Quebec and I am looking forward to taking out my 76 TR6.
Does anyone know where and how I can find out how to adjust (If possible) the top mechanism to allow for easy closing of the top. Not really sure the brand name of the one on the car, it has a clear plastic window in the back with a zipper all around. When I have to close it, I always worry that the windscreen is under extreme tension.
Thanks for your help,
regards,
LT.

Unless you cannot line up the top clamps (at the windscreen) and pull them down using hand labour, I don't think you have to worry about it being too tight. They are designed to be tight to keep the top from flapping in the wind. The top will stretch (as it also shrinks a bit while down)

You probably have a Robbins top. They, I believe, are pretty popular given the quality and price of them.

The only way I know to loosen it is to separate the top from the front frame bracket (the one with the clamps)and glue it on with more slack. It is unlikely you will be able to do that with the current top as it has been cut to fit and you will probably need a new top.

I also point out that Canadian Sprlng and Fall make it more difficult when the temperatures are below 20 C. Try raising the top but not buttoning it down and place it in the sun for 30 minutes on colder days to get the top as warm as possible when you want to put it up. Makes the job a little easier.

Hope this helps

Thanks Mike,
I will try your suggested method, I usually leave the top down mostly all summer long, but this year I want to drive the car a little more and would like to be able to close it up if I leave it parked for a round of golf.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

I agree with Mike. It needs a good warming up for it to stretch. It should be tight.

Let it sit in the sun for a while with windows up top up but not latched. By the end of the day, it will be easy.
Your other choices are: a tonneau cover or from MOSS

OK here is a test for yuall
Can someone tell me the EXACT year of the TR in the picture? There is one item on it that actually tells you it is a late model of that year.

Careful now Rick, once again we have to consider the general flakiness factor associated with that particular production run over and above the general year model flakiness factor associated with the cars during the overall TR-6 production run. With it being something that was initiated on the fly as part of a recall campaign, yet another layer is added to the flakiness factor. If it were any flakier, you could use it to make spanokapita or baklava.

As a result, some cars outside of the official range have been known to have these particular items fitted in that time frame.

No t with that bad view. Can you show me the drivers side piller with the little metal tag on it?
DON KELLY

I give Rick - Whats the clue.

The use of TR6 lable at the rear suggests a 69. I can't make out if the headrests are fold down from the picture which also would suggest a 69.

My 71 had the same
DON KELLY

I thought the TR6 labels went to '72. Mayby not. What is the little red reflector under the tail light? Did any of our cars come with those?

Rob
rw loftus

Some 71's had that as a short fix for US regs.
DON KELLY

rw raised the temperature a bit, Don is getting warmer. Buried within the site is the "official BL answer" with production times and chassis numbers plus Don has hit on a layer in the flakiness factor mentioned above. Who can come up with the official answer first?

Happy hunting.....
SteveP1

Steve gives the clue where to find the answer...I add to it by saying 2002.
Yes Rob they where on our cars. You ask the right question but what year and for what reason?

The OFFICIAL answer says one year but I think it overflowed into another year as Steve says....unofficially.

Oh Ya, you chaps with copies of CDII also have the answer there.
