Triumph TR6 - Alternator
I've been having some slight difficulty with the alternator on my '71 TR6. The engine has to be run up to 2500/3000 rpm before it comes online. Yesterday, second sunny day of spring (??) no alternator at all. I even beat it with a hammer to no avail. Don't really want to swap for GM or Bosch. Are we talking fried voltage regulator or??? Thanx for you help. |

For the 71 it is a straight swap for the Bosch. Unless your a concourse person. It's a no brainer |

The surest thing to do is to remove the alt. and take it to an auto elec. place where they can test it for you. Rob |

Hi At the end of April my Alternator died as well. I disassembled it and found the brushes completely gone. I decided to rebuild it my self and found a full rebuild kit (bearings, brushes, rectifier, regulator. slip ring) on e-Bay sold by JCR Supplies. I am glad I got it as it turned out the voltage regulator was gone as well. The kit was about $45 delivered by air freight. I ordered it on a Sunday and received it the following Monday. As a word of caution- you need a soldering gun to disconnect the slip ring and rectifier. The bearing on the pulley end is a challenge to remove. The kit had no instructions or wiring diagram so I am glad I had my Haynes manual. The voltage regulator was different as the leads were not the same way so it took a bit of web searching to figure that out. And the rectifier in the kit was assembled slightly differently than the one from my alternator and I had to disassemble it to reconfigure (easy to do) All in all a good learning experience and I have a working alternator now. if any one is interested in knowing more let me know. |

Michael- Stock alt? |

Don, Autozone has a 20% discount at the moment for drop ship orders. What's the unequivocal identification fot the Bosch replacement alternator for the 71? I've put this purchase off since there's no place for my engine yet, but seems a good time to get it added. Thanks. db |

A rebuilt one at Advance Auto is only $54 for the stock unit.....plus I got 10% off for military.....plus a warrenty....= a no brainer IMHO. |

Don Stock alternator and original. Model ACR15. I am trying my darndest to keep it original. Jim- ahhhhhh! to be in the USA where there are choices and options to get what you need for low $$$$. Good luck in finding any alternator for sale for less than $100, particularly one to fit a vintage car in Canada. |

Douglas- Sorry, just got back from picking up daughter in Savannah. I don't remember much just that it was a Bosch wit rear window defogger. Most Fiestas came with a ford alt. Be prepared to play pulley swap as most don't have a pulley. Used to have the site bookmarked for a company that sells them with the pulley. Another thing to try is the Saturn Delco alt. Basically the similar set up I think and the Wedge owners use it. Mike -Understand your original feeling. Though $45 to stay under amped is almost the price for new better |

Thank you all for your comments and help. I borrowed a working alternator with the same result. I then disconnected a few wires, especially those at the starter, cleaned them and, lo and behold, we have lift off. Now im chasing down a modern alternator to swap. Thanx again |

I just got a bosch 75 amp for my 73 on ebay from bnparts. Haven't put it in yet but it looks like a direct fit. I ordered it on Sat and had it in my hands on Tues. When I got it, it had a 3/8 pulley but I needed a 1/2. I emailed them and they sent out a 1/2 for free. I didn't even have to send back the 3/8. I think Don's right, it's a no brainer |

Brett has the company to use. I lost them from my Bookmarks some how. You need to ask for a pulley or have yours installed |

Hi Folks I just replaced my Delco with a Bosch AL530X, came with a 1/2" pulley installed. Les |

Les, Source?? db |

Hi Doug, would you believe from the local mom & pop parts place. They had one on the shelf with 2 years warranty and 1 year roadside assistance, and all this for $99 Canadian...that's with mine as a core unit |

Hello, A good source of lucas new alternator at low price is farm tractor parts supplier. I found that on the road in the middle of nowhere when one of us encounter an alternator problem. We found a brand new alternator for a Spit at near $100.. IT WAS FOR A FORD TRACTOR. REF: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/Alternator/Ford/Tractors-Farm/ALU0022/A Cheers, Jean |

Hi Folks, Just fitted the "New" Alternator. I had to move to base plate 90 degrees to allow for the alternator not tofoul anything, and then I realised that the alternator is a remanufactured Delco Remy by Bosch. I have installed it, now the question I have is a simple one, does the fan belt have to go on the water pump pulley closet to the engine block? or can I use the one nearest the radiator? WHY do you ask? If on the pulley next to the engine the belt is too close to the alternator cooling fan. Thanks les |
lw gilholme |
Well I'm confused do you have 2 pulleys on the WP? |
DON KELLY |
Don See the pic...dual pulley, just like the one in the BL workshop manual. Les ![]() |

On later cars the water pump has 2 pulleys. The one closest to the engine is driven by the crankshaft pulley and drives the alternator, while the pulley at the front drives the air pump. The pumps are interchangeable, so after 40 years it is quite possible that an early car would have the double pulley pump. |
A Hewitt |
Les That's interesting - the two pulleys on my pump are further apart than that. The rear one is probably in the same place, but the front one is further forward by maybe an inch. Can you realign the alternator by changing the shims and spacers at the mounting bolt? Alistair ![]() |
A Hewitt |
Alistair, I will try again and try to shim. But if I cant, I don't see why I cant use the front pulley as they are the same size and its a one piece. Les |

I would use what pulley seems to be the more aligned |

I just recently installed my Bosch 75 amp alternator wih no problems. the 1/2 inch pully is larger that the stock pully, so I had to use a slightly longer belt, but it lined up perfectly. My 73 also has a dual grove pully on the water pump. I am led to believe this was a standard fitting for U.S. models, probably to accomodate the dealers that were fitting air conditioning as they would require an extra pully to drive the compressor |
