Triumph TR6 - avoid 'hillsidetools' on Ebay at all costs...

Gentle Geese,

You'll not want to have any dealings with hillsidetools on Ebay.

No shipping, no responsiblity, uncalledfor negative feedback.

I hope no one else gets burned by this moron.

Jim, I've had similar problems with other vedors on Ebay. My kid bought one of those motorized scooters, with his own money, and we had a horrible time with the seller. The seller wouldn't respond to my emails about payment, so I didn't know where or how to pay (they wouldn't take Pay Pal). I ended up getting put on some ebay non paying bidder list until I sent ebay copies of the 3 or 4 emails I had sent the seller. Everyone should be very careful with ebay sellers, or your Goose could very well be cooked.

I've heard the best way to avoid this is to send money via the post office. Apparently the threat of Postal Fraud causes these bad apples to straighten up and fly right!

I guess I have been lucky so far and have no first hand stories of e-bay problems, but know others who have. It seems there are lots of Porsche charlatans out there (based on the different stories I hear). One friend who plays in that sandbox refuses to use anything other than mail and postal service money orders. Any time there has been a problem, he just contacts the seller, explains the legal implications and suddenly the problem goes away. He either gets the stuff or gets his money back. The best one was when the guy was seemingly slow on the up take. Turned out that he had sold that transmission to about three different people. The next call just happened to be answered by the guy's mother. Mom quickly picked up the legal implications and money was returned by mom herself. Hopefully, mom took it out of the little weasel boy's hide.

Does it really cause them to straighten up and fly right? Probably not, but it does seem to keep my friend from getting burned.

Before bidding on any eBay item one should do a quick check of the sellers track record. The track record on ebay is called "feedback".

I had a quick look at the feedback database for hillsidetools and quickly discovered this is a seller to avoid.

The system works well. I'v purchased over 25 items on ebay and never had a hint of a problem and in fact the service for the most part is better than bricks and mortar vendors.

My 2 cents.

I've done quite a bit of buying and selling on Ebay and so far [touch wood] the experience has only been good, I think after a while you get a feel for whether you're dealing with a rogue or not.
The feedback needs to be treated with a bit of care because a lot of people don't get the negative they deserve due to someone's fear of a retaliatory neg.
My simple rule of Ebay is 'if it looks too good to be true it probably is'
Anyway, thanks for the warning Jim and I hope his goose gets cooked.

Most of my ebay transactions have been very good, just a couple have been a problem. 95% or so of the sellers are really good people, but it is hard to tell.

An interesting comment was made to me last year by the car transport guy that delivered my 71 TR6 from Miami to my house in Tequesta (just north of Jupiter Florida)--I had checked the car out as well as I knew how, but didn't feel safe driving it close to 100 miles until somebody competent really checked it out. It only cost $150 or so to deliver anyway. The guy who delivered it told me that sometimes he delivers cars people bought on ebay sight unseen and they really get some shocks when they see them. I don't see how anybody could buy a car without seeing it, but I guess people do it all the time.

Actually, I've done it John. I've bought several cars off Ebay (mostly early American muscle car era stuff) and haven't been burned yet.

My favorite part about this whole thing with this moron from "hillsidetools" is that I didn't pay attention to the prior negatives he had gotten. Live and learn.

Jim,

Look at the negative feedback he left for YOU, he's warning not to do business with you.. You could get future problems if you want to buy again from E-bay.
Adding a reply to his comments could prevent this.

I've had no problems so far with E-bay. Bought several things from USA and UK, no problem. But there's always a first time.

It's called retribution Eric. The guy is lying through his teeth and refuses to accept the truth. Look at his feedback. He has a BUNCH of non-ship, late ship.

There is nothing you can do with people like him except warn others.

Jim
Jim Deatsch

Excuse me, if I didn't wrote the correct English word for it! You did understand what I ment, didn't you ?

Eric de Lange

Actually this jerk has a problem with defective merchandise more than anything else. He is selling bamboo stuff like grinders starting at 99 cents etc.
His product is crap and when it fails he expects the purchaser to pay to return ship before a refund is issued. Good grief - the return ship is more expensive than the refund. eBay only works when the product is decent.

By the way, I'm an ebay seller and in over 250 transactions I'v had only two where the product was defective. In both cases I refunded the money no questions asked. It's the only way to fly if your a seller. Just give the money back and move on.

Hillside is making money hand over fist with the $0.99 + $29.99 S/H scam (300%+ profit and more!). Doesn't excuse the quality of the stuff, but buyers have to understand that a 99-cent drill isn't worth anything.

Another one to look out for selling TR parts is "carl1tr" (or something like that)from south Georgia. I was threatended with physical violence from him.

Eric,

My apologies, I ment nothing about your excellent English.

"It's called..." is an American term that means "This is what happened...". Idioms get us confused with this common language sometimes.

I certainly did not mean to criticize your excellent English my friend. Gawd knows your English is MUCH better than my Dutch. <G>

Jim,

No harm done.

You get what you pay for!
David B

I have been fairly lucky on e-bay, however, there are some very ignorant and rude sellers that if asked the simplest question seem to get rather huffy (car11tr6 is one seller),,but despite his rudeness, the transaction was fair and delivery expediant..so go figure.
Bob Craske

David B,

Small correct:

You do not necesarily "get what you pay for";

But most certainly "pay for what you get".

You can indeed overpay for something. Less seldom will you underpay for it.

An easy way to filter out some of the loser sellers, is to ask them a question about their product. Just make up a question if you have to. If they don't respond in a timly manner, they are either overwhelmed with orders or they don't know what they are doing. Be suspicious!
