Triumph TR6 - Axle shafts

I would like to rebuild both of my rear axles (72 TR-6) but dont have the tools. Does anyone know of a company that does this? I'm still looking for replies to my gas mileage question.

I JUST HAD MY 71 DONE BY THE ROADSTER FACTORY. I HAVE NOT HAD IT ON THE ROAD YET TO TEST AND PROBABLY WON'T FOR SOME TIME. I EXPECT THEY DO A GOOD JOB. APPROX. COST $400-500 I SUGGEST NOT TO DO IT YOURSELF.

If the hub bearings are OK and the splines not worn, all there is to do is renew the universal joints. The UJs are the major source of 'clunks'and wear rapidly. You can renew these with no more than circlip pliers, an appropriate socket to use as drift, soft mallet, and a vice. Use moly grease on the splines before refitting and rewire the gaiters. Make sure you do not over-tighten the six nuts holding the hub and brake plate to the alloy trailing arm.

I AGREE W/PETER. THE U/J ARE EASY. THE TOUGHEST PART IS GETTING THE NERVE TO BEAT THE HECK OUT OF THE OLD ONES TO REMOVE THEM. I USED C/V BOOT STRAPS(STAINLESS) TO STRAP THE BOOTS BACK DOWN. GO FOR IT.CRUISING IN A TR W/ THE TOP DOWN AROUND CAPE FEAR MUST BE BEUTIFUL. GOOD LUCK.

I am getting a rumble type sound from my rear end. I would like to know how to determine if it is the rear end, the rear hubs or the rear tires. I plan on swapping the rear end with a spare that I possess. Is there a way to test the hubs while the rear end is out of the car?

Thanks for any help.

John, You can get an idea of where your rear end is rumbling ('cause your friends are to embarassed to tell you) while driving. If the rumble comes when transmission is under load ( accelerating ) suspect prop shaft UJs or drive shaft UJs. If it comes only in corners suspect hubs.By jacking up the rear of the car you can often see the play in a worn UJ by turning the tyre to and fro.Look for the ends of the yoke moving within the cages. The drive shaft UJs are by far the most likely cause of rumble. The differential is more likely to whine than rumble.Knocking sounds, especially on driving off from stop, can also result from the diff mounting pins coming adrift from the chassis, worn rubber mountings, or fracture of the steel bracket supporting the front diff mountings.
