Triumph TR6 - Axles Left or Right

Ok
Now I am showing my lack of mechanical knowledge. Yesterday I was browsing through e-bay and came across two axles for sale (left hand & right hand).

Last year I started collecting missing bits (for year 4), and aquired an axle (L or R who knows?). Is there a difference between the left & right? And how would I be able to identify them?

Hope you can help before I end up with 2 left or 2 right.

Regards

The rear axle shaft and hub assembly can be installed on right or left side. No such thing as left or right.
One thing for sure Les, you do not need 3 of them:)

Les-If we are talking about the inner rear axles, there is a difference between left&right. Looking at plate CZ in vol. 1 of the TRG catalog, #29 is the left axle and is longer than #30 the right axle.
The outer axles and hubs are interchangable, as Rick C. mentioned.

Does it make a difference if it is left or right hand drive?

Thanks for the info. So where does one get hold of a TRG catalog?

You are correct...did not notice that part of the differential has a left and right side. It appears different length.
Joe, my guess would be, no it should not make a difference if left or right hand drive. The tranny (and engine block), prop shaft and the entire rear end are universal to manufactured TRs regardless of destination. Year change does not make a difference either.
Les, TRF (The Roadster Factory) Spare Parts Catalogue Volume 1, ( Berry did a wee typo..it is TRF not TRG)is available from TRF. Google TRF and you will see catalogues. I think Volume 1 is currently $10.00. Volume 2 is and has been out of print for some time. It is not available in hard copy. Fortunately, it is on CDII.

Thanks for the info, I have the TRF catalogue. And it would appear that I have a left hand axle, so this will narrow down the search.

Rick&Les-Sorry about the typo-TRG is not the successor to TRF. I think TRF's catalogs can be viewed online.

Just to clarify for my understanding. The inner axle, which is internal to the differential, has a left hand a right hand version. The outer axle (which includes the sliding joint) is not sided, nor are the hubs. Do I have this right? I was a bit confused as to what an axle was at first!
P A Smith

PA, your understanding is correct.
SteveP

PA,
Like Steve says, you got it.
Rick Crawford

OOPS
Meant to add that I do not really consider that part of the differential as an axle. It is virtually internal to the dif.

Les I would have thought you would get both left and right parts WITH a differential...not as separate parts.

Rick

The diff and propshaft I have, the PO took the axles(complete with hubs etc) et all.

Sorry Les, I am a little confused. If you have a complete dif and prop, not sure why you say: "And it would appear that I have a left hand axle, so this will narrow down the search."???

Nice guy taking both axles and hubs. I guess that is why we call them DPOs.

Rick

Going through my records etc, the person who sold the axle had two for sale, and I was only fortunate to get the left one.
