Triumph TR6 - back wheel fell off - Help

I had just returned from a 16 hour trip and while driving my daughter to the mall (40km/hr)the driver's back wheel fell off .... the mechanic says it is unusual, but the spline/shaft that holds the brakes, tire mount etc just snapped, they had replaced the brakes 2 months ago. Any suggestions on what inspections / lubrication should be done to anticipate any of the wheels falling off or chuck this up to metal fatigue

Jeff,
I hope your damage was minimal, I had this happen a couple of years ago on my TR4-IRS. This is actually a common failure item on these cars especially when driven hard or racing. Metal fatigue is the culpret here. There are a few companies in the UK which make heavy duty replacements but they are quite expensive. For us lower buck guys replacing the axle stub is the only answer. You could have them xrayed before install. They run about $125.00 or so as new parts and replacing them is a large chore which requires the big heavy hub "breaker" and then a bearing kit. You could have this hub rebuilt by TRF or some of the other dealers offering hub repair. Good luck, Steve Yott

Other types of inspection to consider are fluorescent penetrant inspection or magnetic particle inspection. The FPI will be a surface only inspection, but since the crackes would generally start at the surface would be effective in all but the rarest of cases. MPI is a surface and slightly subsurface inspection. It relies on applying a magnetic field to the part and seeing where the particles stick. Discontinuities will have different energy levels and are revealed by the powders. Radiographic (X-ray) inspection suggested above can be used, but is sensitive to beam orientation effects. This means that you are looking at having to take multiple shots to get a good inspection.

I have some spare splined shafts for the TR6 if it can help you out. I think they are OK and can confirm if you want. I have also rebuilt the assembly before and used a shop in Rexdale Ontario to separate the hub from the shaft- he has the "breaker" equipment . If interested drop me a note and I can provide more detail.

thanks for the responses ... sat with the mechanic and he had taken it out for fixing, should have back this weekend for fall colours. He is going to be examining the frame a lot closer this winter (with the ideas, thanks) as that is where it will be stored.

thanks Jeff
