Triumph TR6 - Black Matte paint of TR-6 rear and W/S

Checked the archives and found some discussion, but no paint code reference for the black paint on the rear valence and the windscreen. ANYONE have any idea of the proper reference number for this black paint? Thanks.

In searching through some old archives I found this comment:

"6 Pack publishes a magazine and answered that question in a 1994 issue. The article includes a description/diagram of where the color is to be applied
around the trunk/rear valance area. They recomend Dupli-Color DA1603 "semi-gloss black" in a spray can or Deltron satin black with flattener(DX685) when spraying with a gun."

The post is ten years old so I'm not sure if the information is still valid, but hopefully it's a step in the right direction. Other posts refer to a Satin colour rather than Gloss or Flat.

The full post can be found at http://www.team.net/mharc/archives/html/triumphs/1997-06/msg00900.html

Doug,

When I restored mine I did some research on this and found that it is semi gloss or satin black that works, as stated above. Triumph called it matte black. I used a spray can that I got from the paint supply shop.

I also went to a local British car show and found an original TR6 with all original paint and took a bunch of rear valance pictures up close so I could duplicate the masking lines. I can send you the pic's if you'd like. Just let me know.

Henry_ME,ME ME!!!

Doug. Powder coat the windscreen low gloss black.
DON KELLY

Doug,

It may well be the actual paint was flat back and the semi gloss part comes from the top clear coats applied to the car.

This technique was used in may cars during the 1970's.

Pete.

Okay Don, Doug.. anyone else. Give me your email and I'll send you the pic's

Doug... by the way.. I forgot to mention that I was never able to find a paint code for that black. I tried for sure but no luck. And I used the same satin black on my windshield frame. Maybe there typically is no paint code for a satin black.. I don't know.
HP Henry Patterson

Henry, Thanks. I believe that I have your photos already. I know where to paint...just now what paint to use. Dave More, thanks for your reference. That's the first I've seen at identifying a color code for the matte black. My bias is to paint the whole thing body color and be done with it, including the mirrors, but Steve Pike dissuades me!!

Don,
Can 't get the windscreen in the oven or I would do just that!! It'd match my rear bumper supports that are PC'ed satin Black!!

come on, spend a buck. Send them out. They'll last forever.
DON KELLY

Doug,
I'm with Don....I have 25,000 miles on mine since I got it on the road, not one rock chip on the windscreen frame. The powdercoat held up great, and you can scrub hell out of it to get the bugs off without a scratch. Well worth the investment
Have some scotch and think about it!

Henry, please email the pictures of the rear valence. Thanks! bobselby@bellsouth.net

Dissuade eh? The blacked out rear panel is definitely a period North American "automotive fashion statement" if you will and one that I think looks rather nice. As far as I know, that was only used officially on the North American market cars. The black windscreen frame on the other hand was factory configuration on all but the 1969 TR6 models.

Just remember the mantra: "it's my car and I can do with it what I want." If you wanted to turn it into the Batmobile, then go for it. Most people might cringe at the thought, but hey, it's not their car. And who am I to complain? I am the one that thought a red wrinkle finish would look good on that valve cover.

On another note, looks like the slacker days of not signing in to post are over due to the SPAM-Fest on the TR5 page. I think my webgirl was on to something. About ten years ago she said we would look back one day and think that was the golden age of the internet. There was a good bit of content available and it wasn't being abused yet by all the hackers, virus distributors and spammers.

Doug:

I did mine satin black on windscreen frame and rear valance and it looks great. IMHO, I think any black on the rear would compliment the car. I've seen "original" cars on e-Bay with body color rear valance and it looks the pits.

So far as I am able to determine the blacked out rear panel was applied to all TR6 cars built and was not unique to the US market.

It certainly was applied to those sent to Australia and I would guess New Zealand and South Africa as well.

Incidentally the same decoration was applied to the upper level Triumph sedan models like the 2500 PI and the Dolomite Sprint.
Lesser spec'd models managed with standard paint.

Leyland always seemed to lump these places together for built purposes.
Maybe it was something to do with the Rugby connection?

Cheers , Pete.

Peter Thomas

Henry, not yet!! Did you change the AT to @ and DOT to .?
db
Doug Baker

Yeah Doug

dbakerATaolDOTcom.. with proper change of AT to @ and DOT to .
HP Henry Patterson

Doug..

Is it possible you have some kind of filter turned on?
Maybe to block sleazy TR6 pic's?
HP Henry Patterson

Henry, can I get in on this? My car is painted a non stock blue, and I might repaint this winter. The rear valance is painted the same as the rest of the car, so some pics of where the black is to go on the rear would be most helpfull.

Ya I suppose it would help if I gave you my e-mail address. Use to have it with my name ...got rid of it and figuered most regulars on this BBS had it.
rjcassocATlynxDOTorg. Sorry 'bout that Henry.
I have added the pics to my CD collection. To round out the PICS, I have added one to show the black paint as it should be in the boot area.
