Turns out a good friend of mine in Houston used to race against Mr Tullius in a privately owned TR6. Gave him a pretty good run too as I understand it. When I told him that I bought my 6 he gave me his original shop manual and parts book and told me lots of good stories about his university racing days.

Just waiting to get him up here so we can go for a spin .. should be fun!

Dick. I met today and what a nice guy he is. I went to Sebring today to make contact with a couple of old friends and have always wanted to see his collection and as luck had it he was there, we had a long chat because of my previous job with the race team in UK. and took a couple of photos of the last TR6 to come off the line and has only 800 miles on the clock! I recomend a visit to anyone who is interested in old aeroplanes /Jaguar race cars or Triumphs

Lucky you Clive. I had heard he was a great guy but never met him.

Does Bob Tullius still live in Winchester, VA?

Group 44 was housed there, and he had his oil delivery business and personal planes there as well.

We used to watch Group 44 at Summit Point - he'd have the whole British Layland group - MGB, Miget, Spitfire, TR6, and V-12 XKE.

A friend of mine runs a business called "44 Restorations", in the same building as Group 44, but I don't think Tullius is connected with Sam's business.

Hi, I was in a doctors office today April 5, 2005 and picked up an auto magazine to read and in the middle was an arcticle about Bob Tullius and Group 44 racing cars. The memories came flowing back of the best auto race and road course race I've ever seen and have not seen one to match it since! The race was at Summit Point, an SCCA race in the early 1970's. It was an A,B,C production race lasting 30 minutes. Bob was driving his Group 44 TR-6, the field was loaded with Corvettes and two Cobras in A and B Production and Bob of course in C Production. One of the Cobras was Sam Finstien from Philapelphia,Pa. At the start of the race and for the first ten to fifteen minutes it was dry no rain. Bob ran I believe in sixth or seventh place, then at about fifteen minutes a heavy mist began to fall and here comes Bob Tullius and the TR-6. The corvettes and the one cobra were just snow plowing tough the corners because of the big engines and weight up front, of course the better balance of the TR-6 and supurb driving of Bob going from, I believe 6th place up to third in a matter of five minutes so! Sam Finstien won in an A Production Cobra and one of the A Production Corvettes finished second,
Bob finished third; but the amazing thing was he was catching the Corvette in second place at the end! I'm sure he could have caught him if the race would have lasted another three to five laps, so much for big V-8's and bad weight distribution on a wet track! I've never in my life seen a better driven race, hands down! Thanks for the great memories Bob, one I'll never forget!

Thank you,

Stan Reeves

Another Summit Point Supporter! Great story.

P.S. - I thought Winchester only had veterinarians? You're telling me that we now have local doctors?

any good pictures of the grp 44 E-type out there? I've been looking all over the web and not finding much. I want to customize a stock XKE model to reflect the race car... Thanks!
