Triumph TR6 - body work / paint

Hello

Can anyone in the Toronto ( gta ) area recommend a good body shop. I own a 72 tr6 that's mechanically solid + good frame and interior but has many flaws in the paint. The car is 100 % metal no fiberglass. The problems are the following ;
- rocker panels shot
- paint cracking / peeling
- crease in drivers door
- some rust below the rear bumper by the exhust
- slight bubbling by rear tail lights

I really love this car. It's a natural high when driving. And it drives great !! The smell, the feel, I really look forward to driving it.

I am very nervous to get the job done. Of course I don't want the job to become a money pit or 2 years down the road it becomes a problem again.

From about 10 feet away the car looks mint. I feel if I don't fix the problem now it will only get worse and cost more down the road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
IRA

A great way to save money and time is to strip all the exterior parts off the car yourself (if you have the space to do it). A bodyshop will be done faster if they don't have to remove bumpers, lights, trim etc.

Unusual...a first time poster and he joined up before posting. Welcome S. We try to use first names here just to be polite. Besides, there are a number of chaps on this BBS who live in S. Ontario and meet up for both summer and winter parties not to mention Bronte or Ancaster.
I agree with Charlie, a fully stripped car makes for a lot cheaper body/paint job. They have to remove or tape it off which translates to $$$$. Everything could be stripped off in half a day.
I would think your best bet is to ask other TTC members or even Fred at BAS for his recommendation. Expect to be in the 3 to 4 Thou cost range.

Thanks for your comments Rick and Charlie. Don't mean to be rude, my name is Ira, hello ! I did not realize my name would not show up on the thread. Don't know how to change it ?

Question : I agree to strip the exterior parts off. What can i expect to get for 3-4k ? I always believe to do the job right the first time.

Have you ever heard of the gulid in Brandford or KM in orangeville ?

Thanks again !

Hi Ira:

I'm familiar with The Guild in Bradford, http://www.guildclassiccars.com (cool site),. They are a “top notch” place, very friendly & great folks (from my experiences), and great work. Definitely, they “do it right the 1’st time.”

I hope that some time I’ll have them perform this side vent mod to my TR6 http://www.streamload.com/johnston21 which is circa a team of 3 works racing TR4’s.

There are alternative though, within the city, and can be considered to be more economical $$$ wise.

I had a good experience in needing attention to the front bumper mounts at an auto body shop on the East side of Bathurst, just north of Dundas (or Queen). Also, there is a very reputable shop on the South Side of Dundas St West, just East of Jane (or Runnymead). If interested, I will collect the names for you.

Thanks for your comments Mr. P Johnston.

I would be interested to get the names of those body shops you mentioned.

That side vent looks pretty cool ! What is the purpose of this ? Air flow ??

Thanks again !

You where not being rude....I was being stupid. Your name was at the end of your post but I thought it was a SHORT FORM like IMHO. To change how everyone sees you go to top of this screen and you will see "Customise". With some spare time on your hands click on "Archives" and click a year and enjoy. I know the place P is talking about on Dundas...reputable.
The Guild I think would be the most expensive but guaranteed to be 1st class. KM in Orangeville I have no knowledge. Like I said, what about asking Fred at BAS. Since you belong to TTC, then there is your best bet for finding a body/paint shop.
For 3to4Gs you should get body and paint done. Any body shop can still match your paint code. From what you say it sounds like a good sanding and a little puddy will fix her up. The sills will be your most expensive part of the job. The sills can be bought from any of the suppliers in TO. If you supply, they will not get marked up twice:)Good luck and let us know how your story ends.

Peter:

Nice vents. I'm sure you must have come across the website I stumbled on. They had a whole series of pics showing how this vent was fabricated. Did you see it? If not I'll try to find it again for you.

Sorry for the tardy reply, just got back from Trout Opener (1 - 7lb. male rainbow, and a little Speck for the misses).

The shop on Bathurst St is no longer there. I'll go thru my box of receipts and see if I can find the name to find out if they have moved elsewhere, or just closed-up.

The shop on Dundas W is called Martino Brothers Auto & Truck collision, 416-763-5211.

Bob, no I'm not familiar with the site. If you could find it, I would be most interested.

The only one I can find now is the www.hottr6.com site where the guy built a TR6 street racer. It only has 2 pics of the fender vents. Your single pic looks familiar and that is a TR4. I came across a whole series of fabrication pics and tech talk on that car in your pic but I just can't seem to find it. Will keep surfing.

Cheers,

Thanks Bob. That pic came from a Triumph World mag article. I also once saw a SpeedTV Legends of Motorsports program featuring the 3 TR4 Works cars racing in Europe.

Hi Ira,

you might wish to come out to one of the Triumph meetings, great way to meet people who have had their cars done and look at the work. But remember its like anything else in this world, although you do get what you paid for, there are many places you will pay the Porsche price for the VW job. Legendary MC does fantastic work at I believe $75 U.S. per hour. I somehow think you can find someone to do an excellent job at a more reasonable price. Just to know,,,,,,,,I have had a friend have work done at the "Guild" and he felt the same as above. My car is being done by one of the advertisers in the rag top. Try to find someone who appreciates the british cars and will put some of the love into the job, like we would do, if we were.
If you email me I will pass on some other info.

Ira, KM is Ken Mason, on highway #9 just east of Orangeville.
He has a number of Brit cars in a barn, does restoration work on all makes, and buys and sells.
I cannot offer an opinion on his paintwork as I have not seen cars he painted.
When your car is painted I am sure we would all be interested to know how it came out and if you are happy on a price/quality basis because this is a topic of interest to many of us.
