Triumph TR6 - Bolt Size
Good Day Folks Can anyone tell me the size of Nuts & Bolts for the Axle to the Diff? Thanks Les |

Hi Les The nuts are nyloc 3/8x24tpi (though some suggest using all metal lock nuts), and the bolts are specific for the job (or so TRF would have us believe!). I was going to use generic grade 8 bolts of the appropriate size, but read so many grave warnings about using only the specific bolts that I splashed out the $20 or so on 16 new ones. Hope that helps Alistair |

Les, Get a set of new U-Joints from TRF and they'll throw in a set of bolts for all your requirements. db |

Alistair- Grade 8 with metak locks will work just fine. I got some swamp land if your interested. It's in the Sudan. |

Don - to be fair (to me and TRF!) I think that the issue isn't really the strength of the grade 8 (I am pretty sure Triumph never even heard of grade 8 and the cars survived 30+ years...). Comparing the TRF bolts with an "equivalent" bolt from Fastenal, the threaded length is longer on the Fastenal item, which to my mind can't be good in an application where an enlarged hole in a flange would cost way more than $20! |

Like the flywheel bolt, it is more of a grip length issue as opposed to a strength issue. My suggestion is to either use the appropriate bolt obtained from "the usual suspects" or go with a AN-MS hardware. |

Hi folks Doug, I have new UJ's. So if I use grade (5) 3/8th x Length x UNC with nylock nuts then I should be fine. Should I use flat or lock washers? Don, what are metak locks? Les |

I think I meant UNF Les |

Les, I'll look and advise, but I think you have it correct. db |

Instead of nylon it uses ametal I guess. All my stuff was put together long before I heard of this. In all the forums it is becoming the lock nut of choice. Now there are a lot of people of built cars with the nylocks and have no trouble with them ,so the choice is yours Steel-Insert Two-piece steel construction. Have higher chemical and temperature resistance than nuts with nylon inserts or thread adhesives. Have higher strength than the hex expanding locknuts. |
