Triumph TR6 - Bosch alternator question

I recently ordered a new Bosch 13107 alternator for my TR6 and yes it arrived with no pulley or fan which they claimed was supplied. I really don't want to return it because it seems to be such a perfect fit. Is the 78-80 Ford fiesta pulleys OD the same size as the Lucas so that I could have the shaft mounting drilled to match the Bosch alternator. I have read through the archives and have not been able to find any info other than not to buy the Bosch without the pulley. Thanks Jim
Jim

Don't know about the pulleys but I would suggest you talk to the place that sold it to you. If it's mail order then call them and see if they can just send you the parts that were supposed to be supplied. If you ordered it from one of the few suppliers of British car parts then they will most likely just ship you the missing parts. Did you try British Parts Northwest? They are really good at that kind of service.

Seems like it could be a hassle trying to find the right size pulley.

Jim,
If you read an earlier archived thread on this subject, you are experiencing the same problem I had. I bought a complete unit from Don K, ending my search. The next step would have been visiting a machine shop to have them modify a Lucas pulley to fit the Bosch shaft. If you need it, the od on the Bosch pulley is 2.65 inches.
Let me know if I can help, and no, you can't have my alternator!
Good luck....

Well if it did not come with it then they need to send you one. WHAT! do they think you are not telling the truth?

Nominally the pulleys on Lucas alternators are the same for all TR6s, but that is not necessarily the case anymore. Over time with consolidation of rebuild lines and such they often used whatever pulley had the right shaft bore and offset that they had laying about. I have two Lucas units both with pulleys that are 2.50" in diameter. OD of the Bosch pulley is as described above.

As far as alternators with pulleys, there is a guy that was selling the Bosch conversion alternators on ebay on an outright basis for a reasonable price, but haven't looked in a while. What you have found from Bosch is confirmation of what Bosch told me when I was looking to do the conversion myself. I believe that NAPA has one available with pulley and fan under their part number BA 1860137.

You can modify a Lucas pulley by boring it to the Bosch shaft size and broaching the key way, but I would go back to the source and either get them to get you a pulley and fan or take it back. If that does no good and since you ordered it, I have to assume that you used a credit card. Talk to the card issuer about the situation since what you got wasn't what you had been told you would get. I have had to do that before with a parts source and it was amazing how much more responsive they got once ther relaized that it was either deliver the goods or get a charge back.

Good luck on this, please keep us posted on the situation.

Thanks for the replies and I will call the supplier tomorrow and see if I can the missing pulley and fan. I have a good friend at work that runs the machine shop and he owes me one so I think I will be able to have the pulley milled. I was really concerned about the OD because of the charging capabilities, but they seem close enough in size that it shouldn't be a problem...right?

Thanks again, Jim
Jim

Jim If no luck I can get you a name of an outfit that has all of it.

Don,

I'll take that name, I have decided to return it. My Lucas is still functional and would like to keep as spare because you never know.

Thanks, Jim

Try going to your part store and ask for part number is BOA666. See if it has a pulley. It might come from Precision Parts.http://www.pprok.com

Please let us know if you are able to source the BOA666 with pulley, i have been looking for a while. Curious to see what the cost is, there was a previous thread that listed one in toronto for 175.00 (+ core)

Today I returned the unit from Autozone for a refund, but other prospects look gloomy. I called several distributors with no prevail.
The prefix BA for BA 1860137 is a Beck/Arnley model which is carried by many of the major auto parts houses. I called Beck/Arnley and even though pictures show it with a fan & pulley it is not available.
Went to http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com referred to by Muenchausen's Garage and the MG guys and talked to the main technician and he claimed that they are unavailable due to the lack of cores.
I have a call into http://www.pprok.com on the BOA666 with pulley and still waiting a return, hopefully I should hear something tomorrow.
In closing these are becoming extremely hard to find maybe almost extinct. Maybe the big three should start researching a similar alternative because it appears to be a lucrative market with us LBC guys.

Will keep you posted, Jim

Has anyone just had the original one rebuilt or are you looking for a higher output ?

Charlies got a good point, in Toronto there is a old auto electrician who specializes in Brits and he can take your original LUCAS and bump up the amperage...probably costs close to a new ac delco with the same output but you dont have to worry about fan/belts/fit/mounts etc...

if anyone wants the name/numebr drop me a mail

Don, thanks for the input. Precision Parts (http://www.pprok.com)returned my call today and they assured me that the pulley and fan were included. They were a real pleasure to deal with but they don't deal direct so you will have to go through one of there distributors. I called the recommended distributor and placed the order and it should be here on Thursday. The dealer informed me that they picked up Precision Parts due to their exceptional quality.

Thanks Again, Jim
