Triumph TR6 - broken steering cowling

Hi Guys; It's me again. Now that I've figured out the frothing oil, I have discovered a new problem. My steering shaft cowling is broken. I am currently holding it together with a hose clamp which seems to be doing alright(sort of). The problem is that neither TRF or Moss have this part available. It's a early 72 with the non-locking steering. Does anyone have any ideas where I may be able to locate one of these. They're only cast aluminium and I am considering having it welded back together. It has to be better than a radiator hose clamp.
Joel

Hi Joel you can do it yourself.

HTS or Aladdin. I use Aladdin mainly because I still have enough rods in one pack to last a lifetime after a few years. Not advised for heavey structural but for what your doing it works great.

Aladdins a little less pushy and been around longer? Most welding suppliers have Aladdin?

Search pages with info.

All you need is a propane torch. Do some practice runs on other items first

Need to remove and repaint of course.

How about just a rubbing with Aladdin...would it not get done by just wishing it?

sorry......

I got a question. If Joel's car is a early 72 and does not have a steefing lock how come my early 71 has a steering lock? Who's is proper? I take it the lock he is talking about is the in the ignition switch.

Don-According to the TRF catalog, the steering col. lock and switch appeared on the 1970 models, at least on the cars destined for the US and Germany. It is possible that some people (like me) have removed the lock and moved the ignition switch back to the dash.

Berry- I followed your movement of the key and the project is deep on the ajenda list. It sounds like Joel still has the key down below and I wasn't sure on the timing of the steering lock addition. I've seen the TRF info but have found that they are almost always on the ball, but occasionally they miss .

Hi guys; Yeah the key is below the steering column. I guess it must have been a DPO. I've only had the car about three years. Thanks for the Alladin link and the idea about rubbing Rick. I was hopeing someone might have heard of someone parting out or maybe knows of a wrecking yard specializing in TR's. I know of a good place that specializes in welding aluminium but would really prefer a whole one. Don't know how difficult it would be to switch back. actually, I don't think that Locking steering is available either. Can you imagine owning a 1950 Alvis or something?
Joel

There's a place in California called Triumphs Only that parts out TR's, obviously. They might have what you're looking for. They have a website.
