Triumph TR6 - Bullett Mirror arrived

A search through the archives showed I'm not the only one who needs a new bullet mirror. In case any of you are still looking, I just purchased a Tex Classic (UK made) stainless bullet mirror from eBay. This is a regular item that sells for $33.00. With shipping charges included, it showed up at my door within a week for less than $40.(US).

Tip: Previously I was hit with a wicked UPS bill ($60 for a $200 item over above the shipping fees). Now I always ask for USPS shipping, not UPS. So far no additional fees.

Anyway, it's a nice looking, flat-lens, polishjed stainless mirror that will be a big improvement over my old pitted chrome version which is hanging on the door by a thread.

Unfortunately, it is installed by two bolts that need to come up from inside the door. Has anyone installed this type before? Any help, suggestions or tips for door panel removal for a newbie?

Thanks in advance

Fred,

I don't have any tips for you, but I'm wondering, did the mirror come with a rubber gasket that goes between the mirror and the side of the door? My bullet mirror is attached to the door, but it's kind of shakey and needs a new gasket. Anybody know where I can get one of these?

Thanks,

Cain,

Yes, it came with the gasket and two bolts.

If I remember correctly, the manufacturer sold a generic installation kit (no mirror)that had a gasket. Visit www.texautomotive.com.

Otherwise, it should be fairly easy to cut your own.

Fred--No door panel removal is necessary. Just position the mirror base on the leading edge of the door and you'll be able to drill (oh no!!) the 2 holes needed and still access underneath to tighten the nuts.

Rick,

Thanks for the suggestion.

You're right, that would be the perfect solution except that I already have a mirror installed a few inches to the rear. I don't mind drilling the required holes but I want the original holes covered by the new base as well.

I'm assuming removing & replacing the door panel would be easier than doing the bodywork to fix the old holes.

I'm also assuming that removing the door panel will give me access to the inside top edge of the door to tighten the two bolts. Anyone with experience?

Without looking at it in person, it seems like the window will also be in the way.

No problem! I have the same mirrors both sides.
You do have to remove the door pannel. Wind the window up. Get out the 1/4" drive set with an extension(s). Take the mirror apart so you are only dealing with the base. You will probably get away with using one of the holes. Use the gasket as your template. After holes are correct, tape off the area on the outside of the door skin so as to prevent scratching your paint. Put the bolt in the socket and with the extension attached push the bolt through one hole. Catch a few threads with the first bolt then do the second. Tighten down with fingers and extension then the wratchet. It is not that bad to do. Put a good coat of wax down before you attach the mirror.

Thanks everyone.

And Rick C. - thanks for confirming the access point and helping me visualize the process.

Is removing the door panel simply a matter of removing the door/window handles and prying it out with a screwdriver? Anything else I need to do or watch out for?

Thanks

Hi Fred,
To remove the handles...assuming the springs are still in place you have to push the panel back in towards the door and expose a pin that goes thru' the shaft of the handle then take an awl or a nail and push the pin and/or grab it with needle nose pliers.

Sorry lad..forgot about the "dreeded" door handle and window crank. There are some past threads on putting the @#^*%^ pins back in the 2 handles...all I gotta say is have fun.
If you have the TRF "bibles" take a look at where the door panel clips are and tap that area on the painted metal so you do not scratch the paint. Do not forget there are (suppose to be) 2 screws hidden in the map pouch.
Have fun

I dreaded the thought of removing the door panel so I pop-riveted my mirror base on. I can just drill the rivets out if I have to remove the mirror.

Great idea...share with us the size of the rivet please.
