Triumph TR6 - Can an average joe rebuild the speedometer

Can an average joe rebuild the speedometer, and are there parts available to do so. I believe the gear has worn out. I replaced the cable, but it didn't help.

Hi Joe

Never tried to rebuild one but check with any TR used parts supplier. There are lots around cheap. Jim the goose may have some? Sorry Jim reasonably cheap?...:)

Check that the cable is turning at the speedo - (rear wheels up, in gear & running).

I had a problem at the gearbox end where the square sleeve into which the cable fitted was very slightly worn and was not turning the cable (mine is an angle drive with O/drive but you should check yours all the same).
If it's definitely the speedo, I will try to chase down a very good link on this specific rebuild.

Joe,
I don't know about the average Joe being able to get parts if needed, but here is a link on "Smith's" speedometers.

It may be better to send it to a reputable shop, rather than taking a chance on destroying something else in the "process"

Hope this is helpful,

Joe - For a couple of years my speedo had a swing from 60 to 100 MPH when I was doing about 80. On the way home from VTR-2001 in Breckenridge (5220 miles all told) I noticed as I stopped for gas in Kansas that the main mileage counter was no longer advancing. But the trip odometer and the swinging needle were still OK.

When I got home, I took it apart and found that a bakelite gear had lost a tooth. I tried and tried but couldn't find a place thet sold parts separately.

A new speedo cable eliminated the swinging. I had pinched the earlier one between the block and the starter motor and this added frictional resistance.

So I had Nysonger (914) 381-1952 near New York City repair it and re-calibrate it. It cost me $133.75 in US dollars including shipping.

Here is all the explanation in a Tech Article :-

Joe,
I took Don's lead last year with Nisonger, and they did a nice job. They also advised me how to be careful about buying a used one. There a tiny number on the bottom of the face after the SN number, that tells how many times the cable turns in a mile. Not all of them are the same, so get one that has the same number as yours, and hope its ok. Mine was original with the car, and off by 20% just due to age. I heard the magnets get weak after a while.

Good luck,
The other Mark from NC.

Apparently "Joe" doesn't check in often.

The Goose is BACK, he's taken up residence in the garage waiting for the TR6 to come out of storage.

Dratted Goose, all that honking.
