Triumph TR6 - Car runs rough after warm up

I have a 74 tr6. I just had carbs rebuilt,new wires,plugs,choke cables ,manifold gasket,air cleaners and and electric ingnition installed in my car by a guy who worked for Leyland for 15 years.

When I first start car, it starts rigbt up on one turn of the key and choke half out. no foot on gas.
The runs great for about 15 or 20 mins. After that the car power breaks upon acceleration in every gear. I have pulled the plugs and they seem fine maybe a little lean but ok.
I have noticed sometimes if I pull choke a 1/4 away out when the problem starts it helps but than other times it doesn't.
The positive thing is my overdrive works in 3rd and 4th gear so at high speeds it is ok.
This is driving me mad. Taking all the fun out of the car. The car looks great but not bumping mis firing along.

The air can get very hot under the bonnet at low speeds once the engine is hot ( after 15 min or so). Try wedging the bonnet open an inch or two as an experiment ( tie it down firmly!!) If that solves the problem you'll need to fit a cold air duct to the carbs from the fornt of the radiator- the PI cars all had this.

First, join the list. Jim will be telling you this as well.

With regards to your rough running issue. It is possible the coil may have issues when hot, but that is just one of several possible causes. The proper course of action would be to bring the car back to the BL guy and have him double check his work. Could be carbs, timing (the cheap to fix problem you should hope for) or possibly the coil. It is also possible you've got fuel delivery problems, but less so if it's running fine when cold. Check the timing first. If correct, try to borrow a coil to test that theory. Next, have your mechanic check the carbs.

John--What's your hot idle rpm? If high, could be the ZS (1) bypass valves or (2) temp compensators.

I submit that throwing parts at the problem won't get you anything but a parts bill.

The guy that just worked on it, won't he stand behind his work? Take him for a ride, SHOW him the problem. Couldn't hurt, might help.

If it does it after it's warm then it could be SO many things.

If the choke has an effect sometimes and not others then I submit it's not fuel related.

Electrical devices do break down under heat, coils being the most notorious for this issue. Can you beg, borrow, or steal a coil to try? Is something happening to the timing when it warms up? A component in the electronic ignition changing value?

You might take it out, drive it well, then, when it starts to act up, check the timing. See if it's advancing as it should. An engine that doesn't advance at full power is retarded in timing and that's a real performance letdown, not to mention a 'miss'.

And there you have a VERY cheap set of observations.
