Has anyone used a car tilter/roller?

I know you chaps on the other side of the pond have the original way of naming something
(ie. boot/trunk). I think I understand the roller word but would you enlighten me on "tilter"?

Now that is interesting!! Unfortunately the WEB page only shows it and says virtually nothing about it... ie. where do you buy it and how much? Sure makes it look easy to access the ENTIRE underneith without having jack stands or hoist supports in the way.

Simon,
At the looks of this the total weight of the car is taken sideways on the wheel bearings. I doubt if this is a good idea.
Perhaps time to check your insurance terms.

Hi Guys

Your looking for Auto Rotisseries. In my opinion not very practical unless you are doing a lot of frame off work. Due to the amount of space they take up and there limitations. But for your info here are a few hundred pages from google. Home builts etc.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=auto+rotisserie&spell=1

A friend and myself made one around 20 years ago to repair a 69 Chevelle body. The rotisserie took 2 weeks to design/build and repairs took a day and a half? Could have set body on 4 oil drums and been done in a day and a half.

As for the weight question the motor and tranny Gas tank all fluids have to be removed first. Or at least totally drained oil pan removed etc. Even then due to tranny/diff junk sitting in the bottom both should be removed unless you plan to rebuild as well.

I do not advise anyone rotates a car with motor and tranny etc. in. The mounts are designed for on wheels only. Junkyard method of removing engines.:) Been there done that. And you will never get a correct center of balance.

With a full frame vehicle like TR you won't gain much. The TR6 body can be removed which is likely what you need in about 3 hours. By 1 experienced tech.with hotwrench, chainhoist and airtools.

A well read newby should get it done in about the same time a union shop allows 7 hours. Plus 4 stout friends 2 solid 2/4s a case of beer and 1 bottle Single malt Scotch. Drink half the single malt to give you the courage and the rest when your congratulating yourself on how easy it was once you got to it. Lots of penetrating oil and cursing.

If you have questions ask.

Hi Simon just went to that Liqui Web page you noted. That is something like popular Mechanics ads were flogging years ago. I think its the same wife in same jump suit.

They advertise as world patent??? Maybe??? But US and Canadian standards don't allow its sale here as far as I know. Many Rodder mags tested them and found them unsafe if not impossible to use. Going back 15 years.

I notice they don't give hard fast facts as to were to catch up to them if the Audi rolls on its roof either.:)

WHat happens to all the oil as it sits ijn the top of the block for awhile?. Also, what about the coolant?

About 12 years ago, a place in Winnipeg was offering these in 3 sizes. You jack up one side, remove the wheels, drain the oil and coolant, bolt one onto each wheel using the wheel bolts and tip it over.

This tilts the car or rolls it over onto its side without touching the side of the car on the floor. Hence the name tilter/roller.

I remember you need quite a high clearance in your work area. It's not in every home garage that you can use one.

I believe they also sold a device where a 2" shaft came out the front as well as the rear on the car about in line with about fan height. I don't recall how the car was attached to the device. There was a kind of engine stand on roller casters mounted to each end of these shafts and you can tilt the car (usually during total body-off restoration) about the longitudinal centerline of the car - more like a true rotisserie.

When I needed access to underside of bare tub ( off chassis) to patch weld and paint etc.I rolled it onto a folded carpet so that the sills took the weight and the wall prevented it toppling over.
Used four post lifts are ofetn FS at less than the price of a new roller- one is in local classifieds now for £450.
