Triumph TR6 - Car Transport

Hey folks...
Anyone have any experience in having a car shipped across Canada? I may need to have a restored TR6 shipped VERY carefully from BC to Ontario. There seems to be lots of auto carriers out there but who's good and who's not? Can you help? Ken
Ken Shaddock

Put the key in the ignition and drive!
DON KELLY

Send me out there Ken. I will drive it back for you.

Rick Crawford

Well... I'm tempted Don. It would be a great trip but twice the price of shipping and 4000 dirty road miles on my like new baby T.

Hmmm, the coast, the Okanagan, the Rockies, the prairies, and incredible northern Ontario down into lake & cottage country... deserves some thought don't it!
Ken Shaddock

Hey Rick... maybe a twosome. You be Martin Milner & I'll be George Maharis. We'll head south from Vancouver, pick up Rte 66 and then blow out the carbon.
Ken Shaddock

Ken,
Don is right, do the drive. I picked up my 71 TR6 from San Jose in May and drove it back to Chicago with my college age son. We did the tourist route and had a blast! Our trip was 3500 miles. Yeah, the car got pretty dirty, mostly because we drove down some dirt canyon roads. BUT, it was so much fun we're planning another LBC road trip next year.

I thought the car you where looking at was closer to home?
My hat and coat are ready.

Just had a neighbour drop by and he too wants to fly west with me and help drive the car back. I'm warming up to The Great Canadian Triumph Retrieval Experience BC to ON 2007. Maybe I'll get jackets made, grow a handlebar mustache, make a film, post pics to a website, yeah... now I'm gettin' it. Woohoo... Ken
Ken Shaddock

Depending on how sure you are about the car (or not sure), consider taking a cell phone and all the names and addresses of TR clubs & owners along your route.

In 2000, I drove back from Portland Oregon (VTR National Meet) in 5 days via Calgary, North Dakota, Deluth, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, Ottawa to Montreal without any problems.

Excellent idea Don, thank you.
Ken
PS I have a CAA membership but hopefully won't need them.

Martin Milner?? Was he one of the guys on the show Route 66. I guess I should be happy I'm not old enough to remember that one. But I guess you guys are..HA HA. Just kiddin.

Back to the original question....

Passport Transport (if they run up Nawth that is....)

HONK!!!!!

Jim
Jim Deatsch

Thx Jim. Will check with them re service in Canada. Does not look like it from their website... Zip Codes & States only please! Since it is a service of Fed Ex and Fed Ex serves Canada one would expect a yup.
Ken S

Hey
Jim D is still alive!
Rick Crawford

I think we've just been goosed......again!
Roger H

Hey, Ken. I'm with Don K. Drive her back!! I bought mine in Kelowna and drove her back. I took 5 days...great trip.
Cheers

Hey Pete. We used to live just west of Erin at Brisbane Corners. We built a house on HWY 24, white brick, north side, west of the 7th. in 1970. I remember some great snowmobiling days back then. Nice town and beautiful countryside. Thanks for the "go for it".
Ken Shaddock

Jim D and others who may be interested. I just heard back from my inquiry at Passport Transport (part of Fed Ex) and they use TFX International in Canada for vintage vehicle transportation. For an enclosed trailer shipment of a TR6 from Vancouver to Toronto the cost would be $1600.00 CAD. Flying out and driving back is looking better every day. Tally ho!
Ken Shaddock

Ken

There are no memories or good photo ops or stories to be told, no articles to submit to the TTC Ragtop publication on your "adventure" and certainly no fun if you bring your new "other mate" home for the first time in a dark and lonely trailer.
Rick
Rick Crawford

You just sealed the deal RC.

Ken:

I shipped my '76 TR6 from Kelowna to St. John's, Newfoundland with SEARAIL back in 'Spring '74. It cost me $2000 CDN. It was taken by truck from Kelowna to Vancouver and shipped by rail to Montreal and then on RO-RO carrier (dat's a big boat for you landlubbers)to St. John's. With fuel prices at present rates, BC to Ontario will likely be what you were quoted by TFX from most carriers. If I ever sell the '76, the next one will be driven home. Should take only about 3-4 months after I stop off and see all the guys!

Cheers,
Bob

Let us know when you are passing through Saskatchewan. Our club will plan a memorable stop for you in Regina. I think every one of us has dreamt about driving across Canada in a TR6 but a proper excuse just never presented itself. You are a lucky man, Ken.

Tony
Tony Koschinsky

There you go Ken. Your first offer of a beer at the end of a days driving on the trip back.
Unfortunately, Washago is before most us in Ontariario. If you could manage a trip over to Collingwood I would arrange a group of LBCs to meet up with you.

One other question...who gets to go out with you?

If you do this Ken you have to report to me every day so that I can post to a thread about your progress...( I will give you my 800 number:)
Yup Tony, there are a few envious guys here.
Rick
Rick Crawford

I'm touched guys... its becoming a movement. The RCMP or CSIS are probably monitoring this forum. Now I'm thinking of going for sponsorships... you know "the official fuel of The Great Canadian Triumph Retrieval Tour". Imagine... free gas! Do they still make Sunoco 260?, BP "Red"?, BA "98"?, CTC #9?

Before I / we get too carried away I just got a call about another car for sale and it is in Ontario. Oh no... does this mean that Ken's amazing cross Canada adventure may not happen? Stay tuned.
Ken Shaddock

Hey Rick... re who gets to go on Ken's Great TR6 Cross Canada Adventure? Good question. My wife's not keen since she's uncomfortable with stick shift cars despite once having a Fiat Spider. A neighbour seems keen but I think he snores ;). My son-in-law may be up for it since he wants to have his own TR6 some day but his employer is stingy on vacation. Seems a long way off Rick so I haven't gotten into that too deep just yet. I'm retired so I can go anytime after the glaciers pull back.
Ken Shaddock

Hey Ken I'm also retired. How about you and I drive out in mine, pick yours up, and return.
Cheers

Pete Russell

Hi Pete. This idea gets better all the time. We could have us a convoy before I'm done. Cheers back to you! Ken.
Ken Shaddock

I envy you retired guys. The only time I have had with my car in the last 3 weeks has been a late night by the worklight replacing my water pump. If I could retire tomorrow I already have enough hobbies and projects to keep me going for the next 50 years.

Oh well, they are predicting some nice weather for this long weekend maybe I can get some driving done.

Sylvain does not have grey hair like someone I met at BCD.

YUP the price of being young:)

As an FYI, here’s one final note on the not-so-romantic business end of bringing a car cross-country…

SEARAIL (CN) seems to be the carrier of choice. Drakes’ British Motors of Kelowna, BC, Canada use them without customer complaint and a friend has used them for the door-to-door Alberta to Ontario delivery of his restored ‘73.

The cost for an “in running condition” TR6 is $937.88 for a Vancouver to Toronto shipment (CN Yard to CN Yard) which includes a fuel surcharge tax of 13%. If the car was to be picked up at origin or delivered at destination there is additional expense. SEARAIL does not drive the car in either case other than to load or unload a flat bed truck. While on the rails the car is enclosed within a vented ‘box car’ so although it gets some weather it is protected from vandalism, theft, etc. The shipment is insured against, damage, fire, theft, etc. with a $500.00 deductible.

SEARAIL uses the slogan "The Careful Car Movers".

Cheers,

Ken
