Triumph TR6 - Center console on eBay

Looks like someone is starting to manufacture a center console again. It will be interesting to see where the price settles.

The price shot up from 100 bucks to over 500 in 24hr.

There's a short article about the consoles in the recent 6Pack magazine.

Nice work and something very much needed in a TR6, but $500.00....!!! Obviously, the manufaturer ahd a bunch of his friends bid to inflate the price...
Angel L. Traverso

$500.00 HA HA. Just wait! They have been going to $1000 - $1300 by auctions end. This is the 4th one he has posted I think. Seems to be playing it pretty smart as he waits 2-3 weeks in between.

Hi Guys,
I'm a bit confused. Were these options on the original car or is this a recent after market item that has just shown up? Has anyone seen one in person to see what kind of quality they are? Just curious.

Shelly, this was a dealer installed option made by Ammco?, the same people that made the luggage rack. These are actually nicer than the originals except that I think the clock is different from those installed by the original manufacturer.
Gene Holtzclaw

This is indeed a repro of the AMCO console, also distributed by BL under one of the HAC series of part numbers. I don't remember whether the clock in the originals was Smiths or VDO. In the back of my mind, I also want to say that there was lighter also in the originals.

Surprise! surprise!, the demand must be leveling out these things to more realistic? prices. It sold for 550.00.
Gene Holtzclaw

The next one is already for sale, now only without the front part, with the small clock

For those not willing or wanting to use eBay, the consoles can be bought direct with a few options.

WOW,

Imagine you just payed $550.00 ! I would feel @#@#%&*&#@#@ (censured)
Eric de Lange

Oh, excuse me !

It was a good buy !. I was looking at the price for the one piece armrest. The 2 piece costs $ 650,00. $ 100,00 off.

Still not cheap.

I met the manufacturer at VTR 2004 in Richmond and must convey what a fine gentleman he is. In support of VTR and The Richmond Triumph Register he donated two of the consoles for auction. A generous man indeed. The console project was fully funded by this fellow enthusiast at a cost even established companies can't justify but, this is what Triumph owners are all about. Make your purchase or tell a friend and maybe when the break even point is reached we could be in for another welcome addition to our hobby.
PS My wife loves the armrest! Looks good too!

Currently have a counsole in my TR6 from a 1989 Toyoto Camray. Just cut off the back quarter or so of the counsole and in it goes hand brake and all.....Cost me all of $ 5.64 Canadian and looks pretty good.

This might be one of my DOH!s.
I promised my good condition original console
to Bill Brayford for free! Do you guys think I hold
out for a couple of hundred spots?
Do I hear a case a beer? Going, going ...

A deal is a deal, but, have Bill contact me if he has no real plans for it.

Bring it up for vote at the BBS BBQ:)

There has been some wagging of tongues/fingers on the price but, I think there are some things that need to be taken into consideration. First, you should consider that these consoles were not exactly inexpensive when the cars were new, the price is not really out of line in terms of constant dollars. Setting up to produce involves a good deal of work and some up front money, the amount of this money can go up quickly depending on how the items are tooled, the hardware and parts used, etc. And here you have someone that is going to the trouble to make what was both distributed through BL and the aftermarket available again for those desire the console but have not been able to find a decent used one. I wish the guy well and hope that he makes a profit on the endeavor. After all, if he loses his shirt on this, where is the incentive to think about making other period accessories available.

BTW Chris, hold out for the beer.

The pricing and availability of center consoles that will fit a TR6 (and other TRs) seems to have sparked a lot of interest. There is no question that aside from being one of the best looking after market ideas for our Triumphs, the functionality of such a product is very real; A right arm rest can make even short drives that much more enjoyable, but more importantly, the storage space under the professionally upholstered flip-up rest provides an easily accessible alternative to the standard TR glove box which even with a “thumb pull” installed can be a bit of a chore to open.

But $500.00 plus???? I don’t think so! Here is what turned out to be a really great alternative. I searched EBay for a used center console from a 1989-92 Toyota Camry.
After a “bid less battle” (I was the only person in the world it seems seeking such an item) I was able to buy it for Two dollars and ninety nine cents ($2.99 + 12.00 shipping).

When it arrived all that was necessary was to measure carefully and trim off the forward section of the console (accomplished with a hack saw in about ten minutes). And presto!!! an absolutely perfect fit --- looks even better than the early Amco unit available through North American Triumph dealers and, having see several of the California units now presenting themselves on EBay, I would have to say that it has a more professional look to it than even that unit.

As an added bonus, built into the section that has to be cut off is a rather ingeniously designed, perfectly flat, metal, pop-out, two cup holder, which when removed from the un-needed portion of the front console just happens to fit invisibly under the passenger side dash board. In addition the console comes with a built-in electrical on/off push button which I have decided to use to control the driving lights that I have had sitting on a shelf for some time. I have held off installing these lights because I was hesitant to disrupt the original configuration of the Tr6’s dashboard controls for the electrical switch.

I will post a link to a picture of the completed installation as soon as I have some extra time. As much as I encourage and admire individuals and small companies supporting our cars with interesting and useful after market products, the $500.00 plus that has been seen in recent EBay auctions could, as my wife has at times suggested about me, lead others to believe that when it comes to our beloved Triumphs, some of us have “more money than brains”.

Hey Chris

Sorry I missed this.
Sell it my friend!!!

No obligation whatever. I had pretty much forgotten about it. But thanks for thinking of me!!

Remember the old boy is a fabricator and rodder. I usually form consoles out of aluminum using the Aladin 3/1 rod to stick whatever needed aluminum structure together super strong and no distortion due to low heat. Run pop rivets up for form base holder. Bag it with I think its 4 mill construction plastic I use fill with foam and then carve off what doesn't look good. Hit with some glue primer then warm the vinyl with the heat gun apply and pray. Cut off what I don't want. Usually works out.

Consoles are not structural apart from the main center. I think its called the plinthe. Rest is to the owners taste. If you want cupholders buy a minivan.

Most of you are still doing Yoga exersises putting the key in the ignition? Some upgrades make driving more a pleasure? Thats about the last one I would spend $500 on.
