Triumph TR6 - Cheaper seat upholstery.

At the local club's show last weekend, a bunch of guys with TR6s had redone the seats or even the interiors at local shops. One guy had a brand new interior done for $850. It included carpet, door panels and seats, as well as the convertible top cover. To my relatively untrained eye, it looked as good as any I have seen.

Several guys had their seats redone at local shops and again, to me, they looked as good as any I have seen. One guy paid $90 per seat, which is a lot cheaper than buying the foam and covers and doing it yourself. Another guy suggested buying the materials from TRF or British Victoria and paying somebody local to install--he said they charged him $150 to do that.

My seats outside aren't horrible, but the insides are pitiful and I can't get the backs on correctly. Has anyone had any experience with using local car upholstery shops to do this kind of work?

Thanks, John.

At $850.00 that is a deal. I dought you will get the diamond pattern in the seats though. As far as your last question..no, I did it myself.

That's odd ..Rick ...My old seats also had a diamond Pattern in them...Do not think it was original?....P.S. if you want cheap..Sew them your self it's not that hard.

Yes original
The trim panels where changed after CC50000 (1969)then (mostly) again in '74 with the change of the door "pull" being added and removed from the top of door crash pad.
The seats: From 1969 (CC50000) on, the seats had the diamond pattern up to '72 (CF1). From '73 (CF1) on to '76, where the head restraint became a seperate part of the seat, it appears the diamond pattern was stopped/dropped. I may be wrong from '72 0n and am open to correction.

HI..Rick..
..my seats are from a 73 and have the separate head rest...The reason I questioned the diamond pattern as original was when I tore the old covers apart for a pattern, I found that someone had used a dimond pattern vinyl to recover over the old vinyl underneath..plus I have talked to anouther fellow from this same area that found the same thing when he redid his seats.
Peter Becker

What do you guys mean when you refer to the diamond pattern? I have seen many references to it, but don't know what it means. Is that a reference to the ventilation holes? Thanks as always,
John

John,
There are rows of diamond pattern and holes at the center of the back and the seats.

Not on my car, Paddy! I guess I don't have the original, but I knew that. Thanks for the explanation.

My covers are okay, but obviously not original. If I can get the insides fixed at a moderate price, I will just keep them until some far off future date when I or someone else feels like redoing the car's entire interior.

Yes the ventilation holes.

Paddy,"There are rows of diamond pattern and holes at the center of the back and the seats." I think here you are saying that the entire seat and back are covered in the diamond pattern but not the side of the seat or the sides of the back.

Peter, you did not say if the "old vinyl underneith" had the diamond pattern or not...it sounds like it did not. A rather interesting way to recover seats..just put it on top of the old!

So whats the deal you owners of '73 and on Tr6s?... diamonds or nor diamonds on OE seats?

Hey Rick,
Mines an early '74 (CF17089U). It has the diamond pattern with separate headrests and the center-of-the-door door pull. My seat padding is rotten too. A local upholsterer quoted $250 to $300 to restuff. I'll probably go that route before spring.

It's not that hard to recover the seats yourself. Time consuming and need abit of space but very satifiying to say I did it and save a bit. Do the passenger seat first to learn the method.

Hi All...
Sorry...I misunderstood what was meant as a diamod pattern...I was not talking about vent holes...The vinyl that was used to reupholster my seats had a dimond pattern embossed into the vinyl it self and had no vent holes
Peter Becker

Hi,
Just return from Beijing China, can you believe that for $200 you can custom made 2 seat covers in LEATHER!
Unfortunately I can't find leather in shadow blue. Will try harder next trip. It is so tempting to switch the seat color a little. Group purchase anyone?

We are talking the same thing. The original seats diamond pattern had a small hole in the center of the diamond..I suppose ventilation. The new seat covers have a dot but does not go through the vinyl.
And I though cows came in blue also..ya learn something every day. 200 bucks, not bad price Paddy.
