Triumph TR6 - commision numbers

Greetings all,

my commision tag indicates manufacture of my TR as Aug 1970, but the ownership indicates 1971. Im sure one of the experts can answer this. Is there a possiblity mistakes have been made?

Not a lot different than current made vehicles. They come out around Sep. and are designated next year vehicles.

Not sure what month Coventry picked for the next year but was obviously as early as August.

Ken- Looks like you have an earlier 71 than mine. My date is October of 70 and is a 71. You'll find a lot of 70"s stuff mixed with the 71 equipment as they tried to rid of 70's stock. what is your comm. #. Mine is 58660 on the door post, 58978 in the engine compartment.you'll find the 71 seems to be the most populas(sic) among the posters and Rick has a thread somewhere in the archives on the different comm. #.

Hi Rick and Don,

my number on the plate reads CC56757. I did find a chart on the web that indicated this falls into the 1970 target, so still not sure if its a 70 or 71

As in most British documents, don't believe it. The comm. year might depend on U.S. delivery. Who knows. maybe it was finished late.

1971 cars are well represented on the board. Unlike all other years of TR6 production, the 1970 and 1971 model years were produced as a continuous run with no distinct break. This means that my car, despite the July 70 build, was set up as a 1971. If they were running parallel lines of the cars, whether it wound up in the RH or the LH line might have determined if it was a 1970 or 1971 in that normal transitional time frame. This could then be an explanation for the serial number overlaps that have been noted in the late 1970 and early 1971 model TR6s. All other model years had distinct commission number breaks and reasonably clean production line breaks (it was not uncommon for the current and next model year production to have some overlap) that were typically in the August/September time frame. The major exception to this Aug/Sept time frame being the 1969 into 1970 cars. The last 1969 model car was produced in mid December of 1969, while the first 1970 model car was produced in late November of 1969.

I am starting to feel left out. Has anybody started a list of non-71 commision numbers? Mine is a 74, and has those voluptuous bumper overriders! ...so here goes:

IgnatiusR: CF 19363U March 1974

BTW: What do the L's and LO's mean at the end of the commission numbers? And was does the U mean at the end of mine?

Ah come one you guys...your just jealous you are not part of the majority:)

Steve P. Thanks for bringing the MAJORITY list to a current thread. How silly of me...you are correct about the 70-71 years. I NOW remember this information...darn CRS.

Ignatius,
suffix "L" designates a L.Hand Carb. model built before '72 approx.
suffix "U" designates a L.Hand Carb. model built after '72.
suffix "O" means factory Over-drive regardless of year.

Ignatius, this is why all the '71s on the list all end in L or LO.

OK, some Trivial Pursuit:
What does the number one in the following commission number mean?
1CP51975L

I know there are a lot of '74s here as well. Wish I had an 'O'.

From what I hear, there' no such thing as a numbers matching TR6.

Don from Joy-Z.....

There is such a thing as numbers matching, since all production records are in the hands of British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. Purchase of this certificate gives you build information such as paint, trim colors, Factory fitted Equipment, date of build, date of despatch, and key numbers, not to mention the vessel it was shipped on! I learned that my 74 was built 21 January 74, despatched 13 May 74, sailed on the 'Orchidea' to Jacksonville. Engine # CF/16052-UE. That is the engine number on my block. The certificate was a birthday present from my wife! (Isn't that cool?)
