Triumph TR6 - Cracking Distributor Rotors

Hey Gang,

I cracked another rotor on my distributor and am starting to think that my dizzy needs work. This is the second one in 6 months. This time I note that there is also a chip on my cap where the rotor may have hit.

The cap seems to sit pretty firm, I am pretty sure that I had the rotor pressed down well, and the shaft does not seem to wobble. Is there anything else I should look at?

The cap and rotor are made by "Intermotor". Should I stick with Lucas?

Right now, I am contemplating having the dizzy rebuilt. These are not available new, right? (Don K. Would you have Autosport do this?)

Thanks,

Ignatius

Ignatius - I had my distributor re-done at 126,000 miles for the first time ever by Ray Marty just west of Portland. When I drove to VTR in Oregon 2 summers ago, he totally re-built my overdrive as well as my distributor. He has all the test machinery. He does modular work. That is, you take in your part (dizzy) and he will re-build it for you. May-be while you wait. Contact him - he's a great guy.

e-mail address:- raymarty@teleport.com

Tell him I sent you. I've done 23,000 miles on my TR3A since he did the job and it's running great.

By the way, on Saturday, I saw a Spitfire at "British Invasion" at Stowe, Vermont where his upper bearing was so bad that his rotor had grooved the four terminals inside the cap about 1/16" as it was rotating and it was still running great (according to the owner).

At VTR in Red Wing this past July a TR-250 had to replace his rotor twice with new ones before he eliminated whatever was causing his stalling and failure to start. Maybe there is a basic problem with new rotors.

I- Are you running stock ignition or electronic?

How is your project coming along? Even with EI, Ignatius still needs that thingamajig going around in circles.
Ignatius (long time no hear from). Do u have much rotational play? When I installed the Pertronic EI I found I had to shave a little off of the rotor to get it to sit lower (because of the magnet sleve over the distributor shaft). Do the contacts of the cap look like they have been hit (rubbed) by the rotor?
Good Luck

Does your rotor have a type of rivet holding the brass part on?Mine broke and so did my brothers and they were made like that, poor after market stuff.Stick with the Lucas, the brass part is moulded into the plastic and not held with a cheesy type of rivet
Erik

I- Basically what Eric said is true. With my EI I can only run Lucas rotors . The rest are to big.
Don K.
Rick- No progress on car all summer. All efforts have been to creat add on garage for the 6. 700 sq. feet of heated uncluttered heaven. Floor gets poured this week.

Rick C., we had a "real" baby and so I have not been driving the TR (the other baby) as much. There does not seem to be much rotational play on the shaft, but there does seem to be one spot on the cap that looks like it may have been hit. The other contacts look like the usual scorching.

Don K., No, I am not running EI yet, but will probably install the petronix next spring.

Eric, Yes, the rotor does have the rivet.

All, So do most of you guys stick with Lucas? At 2 rotors/6 months, the savings just do not add up.
