Triumph TR6 - Dash question

What are the pitfalls (if any) involved in removing the wood facia of the dash? I'm getting ready to oreder a new one and would like to hear from others if this is as straight forward as it looks or do the instruments etc need to be pulled first. Thanks
JT White

Why not overlay yours or redo it.Pretty darn easy.
Here's mine

JT... mine was removed, sanded down and restored as Don describes. It came up beautifully. No pitfalls really, just the patient process of removing instruments, glove box hinge, wiper switch bezel, plastic headlight bezel, etc. to allow it to lift off.

JT- Winter project, actually now that I see where you live. Summer project
DON KELLY

Don, you got that right! Winter here is for top down driving! Mine has a lot of problems with the inner layers of wood having fell out of it in a few places plus the top veneer has chipped away in spots (the big concern is the layers of wood falling out and the de-lamination in spots) the woman I bought the car from let it sit in a garage from 2001 till this spring about 4 blocks from the beach. I'm just going to go new and be done with it(I'm taking the easy way out)

JT,

When it starts to de-laminate it does not worth to work on it. I had a custom TR6's fascia made from solid solid wood, black cherry, by an ebenist for less than $100. He used my old fascia as model. The only touchy part was to varnish it...
The other difficulty is to select a variety of wood you like and to find it.

Cheers,

Mine was in pretty bad shape. Get some bondo and get it smooth and your good to go.
Here is a few pics I took while doing it.

you should be able to pull the dash out a bit after removing the screws and the 2 big gauges.

The MAJOR thing that needs to be done is label all wires as they are removed.
Consider doing a little clean up on the gauges while they are out. You will never do this again.

Ditto Rick. Also ,if you can spring the dough. Send em all out for refurbishing and maybe the big ones for recalibration
DON KELLY

Label the wires? He aint gonna learn nothin or have any fun lying upside down with the schematic and a flashlight if you do that. Label the wires...
