Triumph TR6 - Differential Repair

I need to have my right front differential mount welded as it is currently cracked. Does anyone know what this reapair will cost and anyone recommended in the Boston area> Thanks. Shawn 74.5

Shawn This is a job I did last year, Mine broke when I was pulling away from Traffic lights and went with a helluva Bang! I removed the diff assy and the job was quite easy. If you have Jack and stands you could save yourself a whole lot of $$ and it is very easy. The task of welding it if you do not have a welder is very easy and I would not expect to have to pay more than about $20 or $30 for that. The biggest pain for me was removing the exhaust system the rest was a walk in the park. good luck Clive

Clive,

Thanks for the feedback. Had same problem with my first TR6 73 about 26 years ago! Shawn.

Shawn, the Roadster Factory sells a reinforcement kit to completely box in the diff mount brackets. I ended up fabricating them myself but they're ready made to be welded in if you buy the kit. This is something that must be done on every 6 eventually; it's one of the notoriously weak points on our cars. Good luck.

I would very much like to have a copy of the diagram for the plates. If you have one please send it via e-mail to me...edit my e-maill address (remove "at" and ".dot") Will make a nice addition to my TR6CD.

Shawn, yup, a must do. Do both sides and go with the polly dif mount bushes.

Thanks

Rick- I sent you a drawing of the plates right after the cd was distributed. You said you were going to put it in your copy. If you didn't I'll send out a copy when I get home.

Rick Sorry to disagree with you but keep the Diff mounts soft to do their job, It will not influence the suspension movement and give a better ride with less vibs! Although tightening these cars up gives better handling the treatment dosnt work in certain areas. Clive

Clive- First time I heard that advise . Seems to make sense. Keeps the vibration down on the diff. How about a response on this from the other hard core builders?

Don,

Don't know what happened there.
Don, two schools of thought on this, one is Clive's that says soft rubber bushes will soak up vibration and this is probably true but they also allow alot of the stress of the torque to load up on the front right diff pin. Alot of us know what a nasty little job that is to fix.
The other school says poly bushes are better because they don't squish, the diff is locked to the mounting arches and the stress is evenly distributed around all four mounting pins and to both arches and then to the frame. I have reinforced my pins and arches and use poly, I'll take abit more vibration any day over
a time consuming repair, but actually I've never noticed any additional vibrations.

Don,

thanks for the response. if you could email me the data I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks in advance. Shawn 74.5

Chris. I like your thoughts on the diff mountings and I tend to agree with you that making the whole thing ridgid is the way I would have gone when I was in my teens! I have just returned from a 3 week vacation in England and would have loved to have had my TR as a runabout, had to make do with a Rental 3 cyl GM piece of C---, But I guess my Tr is holding its value, but would have loved to be driving it in its home country

Clive, 3 cylinder GM car? Didn't know they made such a thing.Any thing over here that it would compare to?

I agree Clive,
Just got back from 2 weeks in Scotland and I really missed my car on some of the country roads..it would have been a blast !
I found a place that rented TR6's for $225 a day or $1000.00 per week..my wife gave me the look and I declined. So we made do with my pal's Vauxhall.

Chris,
After my 15 year old daughter's first car (Chrysler K sedan) was wiped out by an senior citizen running a stop sign, we found a GM Metro...3 cylinders!! She drove it all through high school, got great gas mileage and could haul at least 2-3 of her friends. One of her track team mates, who 10 years later became her husband, and his friends put the car into the bed of his pickup and carted it to a remote parking lot on campus one day. This was in the late 80s. I think the car was an 86 model. I think that there was a model or two after that, but have not seen them for years. Maybe they did not last in the US market.

If you get your mounts welded up DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE CARPET FROM THE REAR OF THE COCKPIT!! Nylon melts. :(

Chris . The car I rented was a Vauxhall Corsa, a gutless car but nevertheless returned a brilliant gas mileage 75 mpg1!!!! With Gas prices nearly $8 per gallon you do not see any thank god. they remain the Vanity accsesory of the Dickheads in WPB and Cal. Hate them!!!

you do not see many Hummers was the word missing
