Triumph TR6 - Differential woes

Lots of noise and jumping about when I let off of the gas. Seems to be the pinion riding up or down on the ring gear. I'll pull it out this evening for a look and would appreciate any input from someone who has been through a rebuild. Do I really need all of those fancy gadgets shown in the "Bentley Shop Manual"?
I treat her really nice. New seats, new paint, garage parked with a car cover, never driven in the rain, lovingly attended to... Why is she constantly rejecting me and costing me money?

All you had to do is ask me.
I can tell you first hand how demanding ( $$$$) a MSTRS can be.
Sorry, she has not had any work done to her rear end:) so no help from me or her.

A year or so ago someone posted about a replacement pinion seal that would move the seal out on the shaft so that it rode in an unworn place. I had someone do that for me (I'm a little old and stiff for creeper work) and it did stop the leaking. Tonight when I pulled the diff the pinion nut had backed off and allowed the pinion to run in and out. No cotter pin was installed during the seal replacement. It's going to be a simple cheap fix, but totally unecessary.

Joe-I had a similar experience. I replaced the pinion seal and thought the pinion nut was retightened to its original position. All was fine for about a hundred miles. Then I heard a terriying noise upon coasting or reverse. I made it home and upon disassembling the diff., there was a lot of metal particles in the oil. On further examination, I found that the pinion moved far enough to the rear to contact the carrier and acted like a milling cutter, carving a groove in it. For peace of mind, all of the bearings were replaced. Some people have rebuilt the diff without a case spreader, but I would rather not.

I'm not crazy about the creeper work, either. But it sure beats paying someone to do it wrong!!

Thanks for your input and information. I was going to just put in a new seal and retorque the pinion nut. Now because of what you experienced, I'll pull the back cover, inspect the carrier and check for metal particals.
