Triumph TR6 - Dipstick

My engine rebuild is moving ahead at the usual glacial speed of my winter projects, and while I tried to make all kinds of notes as I took things apart it appears that I didn't measure the length of the dipstick tube which protrudes from the block. I didn't intend to remove it, but on the way to the machine shop it got a bit bent. The machine shop removed it and straightened it, but now I don't know how far to tap it back in. I hope that someone will be kind enough to measure their protuberance to give me some idea!

Thanks
Alistair

"I hope that someone will be kind enough to measure their protuberance to give me some idea!"

That's gettin' a little personal don't you think Alistair?

If you choose to infer smutty innuendo from my innocent post then there is nothing I can do about that, Rick!

Seriously, though. Whip out the measuring tapes and get measuring guys - how far does yours stick out?

If we get several measurements maybe Rick can start claiming that his length is the right length just like he thinks '71s are better ;-) Oh wait - no more roll calls...

Surprised you did not get an answer.
Mine is going to be a little different than what you wanted but here I go.
My measurement is from the bottom of the block. If you look down at the dipstick pipe you will see 2 bolt holes that are used to hold the oil pan on. Between the 2 holes is a bit of a flat area with a rounded area of the cast block. That is where I measured from. My measurement is 6 13/16".
I can not measure from the base of the dipstick pipe because I had to "putty" that area with metal putty weld to stop a leak. With me giving you this dimension, hopefully someone will give you a measurement from the base of the pipe.
As you can see, the pipe has a small diameter where it goes into the block so my measurement should be OK.

Alistair,
If you don't get an answer by tomorrow. I'll measure mine when I get to the shop and advise. My engine is out of the vehicle sitting on a cart so is no problem to get an accurate measurement.

Alistair,
I have a (mostly) '71 as well, giggle. I measured from the surface of the block to the top of the tube rounded lip. I get 4 9/16" length of tube protruding from the block. I do not know if my block is period '71 or not as it was decked by PO and the ID number has been removed.

I never thought about that tube being variable depending on how far it is drifted into the block. Intertesting though.

Cheers!

Alistair,
The dipstick is right at 4 1/2 " from where it enters the block to the rounded lip at the top. Photo too large to send. Can't figure out how to compress. Send me your email address and I'll you a couple of photos. dbaker04ATaolDOTcom.

Alistair,

I haven't had a chance to get on line for a while. I would have measured the dipsitck on my spare engine.
Looks like you have all the measurements. Let me know if you want more.. to look at the average length:)

Thanks guys

I have been away for a few days (with no internet access or cellphone service - the horror!!), so it was a nice surprise to come back to so many measurements. Thanks for your troubles. I have yet to measure the exposed length of my dipstick tube which I just hammered into place until I felt it was about to buckle, but at least I now know what I am aiming for.

In case anyone is interested, I finally got my head and sump back onto the block late last night, and I even managed to get the rocker shaft rebuilt and set up. I am starting to believe that I might have the engine back in the car before the summer is over!

Thanks again
Alistair
